if you re-watch rising sumner actually sees sheppard pointing the gun at him and nods, well i think shep was pointing it at him. But if you remember runner proply ford was shot by mckay once, it did nothing, its to do with the "super" ford thing.

Why should he feel bad, what he did was the humane thing to do considering what fate that poor guy was facing. He did what needed to be done for anyone at Atlantis!.

If you watch Rising with the sound up you can actually make out Sumner going "Kill Me"

I agree Colonel Sumner was wanting Sheppard to end the feeding on him. I don't see how it could be murder because this is war and sometimes this has to happen.

As for Ford, I don't believe he would compromise Atlantis. He seemed more concerned with making more super warriors like himself to fight the wraith and save Atlantis and Earth. This is how I felt after watching Runner. I agreed with Sheppard when he told Caldwell he didn't think Ford would give away the fact Atlantis still exist.

Sheppard did the right thing and spared Sumner more torment, but it would still be a hard thing to do.

The thing is, capturing or kiling Ford wouldn't be to spare him a horrific death, but rather because he is a security risk to Atlantis.

Ford's emotionally torn between raging Wraith-like behaviour and death threats one moment, and being the sweet young guy we knew, joking with McKay, and eager to 'prove himself' worthy of Sheppard and Atlantis's trust. I see Ford as being a junkie, and junkies are desperate people who are out of control of their addiction, and not using good judgment.

So, Ford's emotionally torn, physically powerful, good with weapons, addicted to a mind-altering drug, and in possession of secrets about Atlantis.

Not a good combination. Caldwell has a point.
