    ‘Stargate: Continuum’ Puts a Cap on SG-1

    Posted by Kevin Carr on July 22, 2008

    After watching the ten seasons of Stargate SG-1, the four seasons of Stargate Atlantis and the recent direct-to-DVD release of Stargate: The Ark of Truth, I can say with confidence that this whole universe beats the pants off of the Star Trek franchise.

    **snippage**

    This is demonstrated perfectly in the new direct-to-DVD release of Stargate: Continuum. Where The Ark of Truth wrapped up the Ori storyline, Continuum puts the finishing touches on the Goa’uld. The last of the Ba’al clones has been found, and the Tok’ra are preparing to extract the symbiote. However, during the procedure, people literally start to disappear. In a desperate attempt to get back home, Carter (Amanda Tapping), Mitchell (Ben Browder) and Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks) jump through the stargate to find themselves trapped in the Arctic.

    **snippage**

    THE UPSIDE: A nice way to end the whole Goa’uld shebang.

    ON THE SIDE: Be sure to check out FSR’s coverage of the premiere of Stargate: Continuum at this year’s Comic-Con!

    Don’t mistake “Continuum” for a new adventure; instead, it’s a collection of the best bits from the last ten seasons all tied together to form one cohesive story. Think of the popular tales “There But For The Grace Of God” and “Mobius,” where time is changed and the world comes close to an end only this time it is on a slightly larger scale.

    What Worked

    **snipapge**

    The highlight however is Gen. Jack O’Neill back in “SG-1” with his usual dry wit and sarcastic -- yet optimistic -- outlook on the world. Given the fact that he carried the series in its infancy, it is very much a lost opportunity that his appearance is more of a cameo than a starring role.

      Stargate - Continuum

      Review by Don Houston | posted July 7, 2008

      Movie: Stargate: Continuum is a relatively stand alone project that attempts to tie a lot of series history together, designed largely for fans over newcomers, and easier to follow than the recent Ark of Truth for those that haven't watched the show religiously (pun intended). The world is contemporary to our own and the space faring ways of our military are largely secret to the general population, the thought being that the public would panic if they knew how many times the program itself invited danger to Earth. In the years of the programs existence, we have made powerful enemies, powerful allies, and encountered a wide variety of sentient life forms that have alternately helped or hindered our progress; the program establishing principles of first contact and a code of conduct not completely alien to the Star Trek franchises Prime Directive. Based in the Cheyenne Mountain military base, the Stargate program has a number of small expeditionary teams, the lead of which is SG-1; the members changing over time as actors came and went. The current lineup of the team is made up of team leader Lt. Colonel Cameron Mitchell (Ben Browder), Colonel Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping), Dr. Daniel Jackson (Michael Shanks), and Teal'c (Christopher Judge) with associate member Vala Mal Doran (Claudia Black), Using Mitchell's aggressive action style, Carter's scientific knowledge and intellect, Jackson's knowledge of societal dynamics and history, Teal's military prowess in battle, and Vala's thieving self interests, the team wins in almost every encounter over vastly superior numbers and technology using their combined abilities. Their plans always fall apart while executed but their resourcefulness is legendary and their on the fly ability to overcome adversity is the most standard thing about their group other than their refusal to leave a comrade behind.

        Stargate: Continuum

        Stargate loyalists will definitely find the action and science fiction benefits of this direct-to-DVD series follow-up to be adequate. Reactions to the film, however, are likely to be mixed. Series’ fans will certainly enjoy the extra 90 minutes to enjoy a show many were sad to see end. While the story is solid compared to a typical episode, it is not necessarily deep by feature film standards. Overall, Stargate audiences are likely to appreciate the opportunity to see award-winner Beau Bridges, and other cast favorites Ben Browder, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks, and others, in action.

          STARGATE CONTINUUM

          A review by Nicholas Newman 21 July 2008

          Stargate Continuum is the second film this year made for DVD from the makers of the highly successful Stargate SG1 television series.

          It has everything a good science fiction film of this genera should have, from action, adventure, paradoxes, fantastic looking space ships, great fight scenes and time travel. However, the real star of the show is the scene extra, HMS Tireless, surfacing through the Arctic Ocean icecap. That's what I call great television.

            Review: Stargate Continuum

            As alluded to earlier, the writing gets jerky at times. Stargate spent 10 years alluding to a complicated, and possibly romantic, relationship between Jack O’Neill and Sam Cater. But in a scene in which Jack is shot, Carter shouts, “Sir!” instead of “Jack!”, which is what the other team members shout. It seemed odd and cold. In general, emotional depth was missing, and I’m not sure whether to blame the actors, the Director or the writing. The saving graces in this respect were Richard Dean Anderson, Claudia Black and Willian Devane. In a fantastic moment, Anderson effectively conveyed the wounded father beneath his smirking, joking facade; Black was warm and nervous as Vala, yet cold and scary as the Goa’uld Kitesh; and DeVane always steals the scene with his simultaneous gravity and charm.

              As they sometimes say, it’s an endless universe out there. Just when you thought we’d seen the last of Daniel Jackson, Colonel Samantha Carter, Teal’c, and company, they find a crease in the time continuum and are back at you, with the likes of General Jack O’Neill, General George Hammon and Qe’tesh in tow, too. Yes, you read that right.

              The release of Stargate: Continuum is apparently a parting gift from the cast and crew, and comes with a number of Easter eggs guaranteed to make old exceedingly happy. It wraps up some plot points but leaves avenues for more. Then again, there’s solid reason for more of the show in the future.

              Last December, the TV series Stargate SG-1 made a little bit of history. After ten years of struggle, cast changes and network shuffles, it became the longest running American science fiction TV series, ever.

              Let’s repeat that. Ever.

              Longer than any of the incarnations of Star Trek. Same for Babylon 5 or Battlestar Galactica. Ditto X-Files, Twilight Zone, Outer Limits or any other U.S. domestic series tripping the TV rift.

                “Stargate: Continuum” — A Slice of SciFi Review

                Written by: Samuel K. Sloan (FarPoint Media Executive News Director)

                On a scale of 0 to 5 stars — I give “Stargate: Continuum” 4 stars.

                While I can’t say a great deal about the real plot and what ultimately happens in this next Stargate film on DVD (because I’m a really good guy who doesn’t want to spoil it for any of my readers - also MGM won’t think highly of me anymore-and we can’t have that!); I can tell you this — if you are a fan of the original series with regulars like Richard Dean Anderson, the late Don S. Davis, Cliff Simon (Ba’al) and the rest of the pantheon of Goa’uld god wannabes, then “Stargate: Continuum” will entertain and delight. It will also add one or two surprises about the Goa’uld that fans were never made aware during the show’s 10-year run on television.

                  Stargate SG1 Continuum DVD Review

                  July 22, 2008 - 11:30 am

                  By Ian M. Cullen

                  My Final Verdict

                  * Main Feature 4/5
                  * Extras 3/5
                  * Overall 7/10

                  Synopsis: An elite military unit (SG-1) must flee back to Earth when two members of their team inexplicably disappear into thin air. But they return to a world in which the Stargate — an Ancient device which allows them to travel to hundreds of planets — was never discovered, and their own history has been erased. Now they must convince a dubious government and military that the timeline was altered by a powerful Alien enemy (Ba’al) in order to conquer Earth, and time is not on their side.

                  DVD Movie Overview: Following the decidedly mediocre Stargate The Ark Of Truth - I wasn’t holding my breath or expecting any great things from Continuum - and after viewing the movie I was pleasantly surprised.

                  Continuum works out much better - and though it still relies on a loose plot thread from the series - the movie works well in pretty much every department.

                  **snippage**

                  Overall: This is a much better movie overall - and felt very much like Stargate of old when the series was exciting and fun to watch.

                    DVD review (region 2)

                    VERDICT: 7/10
                    The action sits at both ends of this spin-off flick like bookends, but fans will enjoy seeing the return of a few friendly faces and a rousing end leaves things on a high.

                    **snippage**

                    As for the film itself, the time-bending plotline presents a real chance for writer Brad Wright to have some fun. Unfortunately, this target is somewhat missed. The script does take the opportunity to bring back familiar faces – with some welcome blasts from the past if you’ve followed SG-1 through 10 seasons. There are also some fine turns by the regular characters as they get to play against type as bad guys, although none of them ever reaches the fanboy favourite heights of The Next Generation’s Picard as Locutus. Having said that, if you stick with it the time-travelling plotline does eventually deliver. On that basis there’s enough here to sign up a few more movies and, ahem, continue 'em. - Matt Chapman

                      The characters played by Richard Dean Anderson, Amanda Tapping, Michael Shanks and Ben Browder are still heroes in “Stargate: Continuum”…

                      “Stargate: Reunion” would have been a good title for a new direct-to-DVD film of this popular sci-fi franchise. Its cast is made up of the major players from the 10-season run of “Stargate: SG-1.”

                      **snippage**

                      But what it comes down to is this: “Continuum” will not draw new viewers in; it’s too much a made-for-fans film. And those fans will recognize where “Stargate” has gone many times before. Indeed.

                          I think he's right that it's made for the fans, it may be a stand alone story by Stargate standards, but a viewer new to the franchise would have absolutely no idea what was going on if they just picked this movie up randomly, no matter what Brad Wright says.

                            (Please follow the link for the complete article.)

                            Time traveling Stargaters bring a whole new side to the SG-1 universe. The new movie's motto could be: "We can do whatever the hell we want 'cause this movie is about time travel," which roughly translated means Stargate: Continuum slaughters characters at will and flips the SG worlds upside down. The good news is the crazy actually works. Stargate: Continuum, the new SciFi direct to DVD movie based on the Stagate SG-1 series, will please both die-hard fans and those unsure if they could sit through an hour and a half of nonsensical gate jumping. It delivers what we've all been waiting for including solid special effects (the likes of which SG has never seen), a lineup of classic cameos, and plenty of "what if" moments. That being said it's still a movie about Stargate so good by SG standards may not be up to par with the rest of the non-followers. Click through for the rest of the review plus who's taking a gate to heaven this year.
