You ever get a chance to read the scripts that were completed but never filmed? I don't know whether I'm happy I did, or even more mad because they seemed to really start to propel the show in a direction.

I've never read the actual unproduced scripts, but in an episode commentary included in the set (or maybe it was in one of the other special features), JMS describes the direction the show would have taken.

Smallville, season 1, eps. 1-2, "Pilot", and "Metamorphosis".
This is the first time I've watched season 1 since first UK broadcast, and - oh dear - the CG VFX haven't aged well.

To the night and its stars, to the here and now with who we are.
Another sunrise with my sad captains, with who I choose to lose my mind,
And if it's all we only pass this way but once, what a perfect waste of time.
