                Just again watched Star Trek: The Next Generation 2nd season episode 'The Measure of the Man' and it reminded me about what true Science Fiction is about.

                The story was of course a court room battle to determine Data's right to choose, to be determined a sentient being. Of course its really a variation of Frankenstein, but in essence it is true science fiction in that it is looking into what does not yet exist or has been discovered, and analysing the implications of that element that is no more than imagination at this stage.

                The show didnt require heavy duty action scenes, superheroes, much over played supernatural beings. It dealt with something that is to be real in future, elements that we are yet to face but our imagination is able to foresee and discuss. Just a Hawking and others are now discussing the future potential of robots and what that means to us, Measure of the Man addressed issues that we will have to face, and what issues will come from that.

                To me that is science fiction and why Star Trek was premier as a TV series in looking at real science fiction issues.

                  I can remember back in the mid-90s, Richard Arnold (former personal assistant to Gene Roddenberry) was speaking at a Star Trek con in Glasgow, and the gist of what he was saying was that best Star Trek stories could be set in the present day or 200 years ago with only minor changes.
