The humor, the characters (and their development), the aliens (real aliens, not (for the most part) just humanoids with bumps or tattoos or weird hair styles), Moya (A living ship! And a character herself!), Pilot, the interwoven story arcs...

And, it's all-around a whole different breed of science fiction show. It's weird, no question, but that's what makes it special to some people.
