I'd be very happy if Merlin gets 10 seasons.

The original plan is 5 seasons, and then more if the BBC want more.

        We're back at this?
Th writers are planning for 10, but only 5 were given the green light.

So what makes this show so good?

Good characters, good storylines, good humour, an interesting take on an old tale, rarely a bad episode, good writers.
Thats my opinion, probably missed reasons out that I cant think of now.
              Id recommend it.

Now that I am into season three... I watch for Gwaine.

Any particular reason why it takes a long time for Merlin to air and be released in the U.S.?

Revenge for taking so long to release American programmes into the UK.

The real reason is first air rights. BBC most likely has something in thier contract that says they air Merlin first. Its pretty common for a show to air nationally before going to the international level

Oh I more than understand that. It's just it seems like it takes longer than other UK shows to get here.

That is probably SyFy's doing of dividing thier broadcast shows into quarters.

                                Hm that could be it...

But you would think that SyFy would want to air it as soon as they are able to, because as the weeks or months go on people might download the episode and not watch it when it airs.

But then again, when does SyFy ever do anything that makes sense?
