Doing a bit of research about character names a few years back, and came across something about how names that started with J, S, M or T were 'stronger' than other names.

If you read any Romance novel, you're almost garanteed that the hero's name will start with any of those four letters.

also, John is the name of a saint, so the 14th Century Devon could have gone through a stage of praising St. John in particular.

I very much doubt that it was because of a King.
There were only two kings near that time one of them was John Lackland 1199-1216
and the other was the Scottish king John Baliol (about 1240 - 1313)

Both of them were pretty nasty. Lackland was the nasty king in the Robin Hood legends. and Baliol wasn't much better.
People don't tend to name their kids after nasty kings.

                Atlantis: John Sheppard.
                Farscape: John Crichton.

                Move on, please !
Come up with something new !
I don't think that's true. John is just a common name in the English-speaking world. Sci-fi writers are fixated on stupid time-travel plots, that's what their obsessed with.

John is an extremely popular name but it's so popular that people aren't as likely to have issues with it. BTW one of my nephews is named Jack. Just Jack, not as a nick name for John.

You'd think Mary since it's as popular a name as John would get equal billing. Nope. I can't think of any Mary's in current popular SF. Can you?

Same goes for our Jack O'Neil unless I very much mistaken. Also it is Jonathan Archer, not John Archer.

And it isn't just the name John. The male lead character has a name beginning with "J" way to often for it to be a coincidence as my sig. clearly shows.

According to his files in Entity it's John O'Neill; I believe the guy in the film may have been Jonathon 'Jack' O'Neil.
