I also love the fact that Alan Rickman never once takes off the stupid head-thingy he wears! It's a classic film!

He's one of my favourite Actors, and I swear he scooped the best lines as Dr Lazarus. (Intergalactic Snape,IMO. )
I like Tim Allen,Tony Shalhoub, and Sigourney Weaver as well. They all seemed to have fun spoofing around, and that's just fine by me !
      I vote it a "Classic" too .

I didn't hate it, but I thought the best part of it was went they dropped that big bad bomb in the Jungle... damn...

Someone told me that last week too. I will have to check that out.

The jungle explosion was pretty good, if I could i'd just get that scene of the film.

Donnie Darko is one of the must see movies that really must be seen, it is sort of a Sci-Fi/Fantasy sort of film, so it would appeal to most people on this site.

I'm not really into the Sword&Sorcery style of fantasy. I like science fiction because, when it is true to its genre, its basis is on actual science or science theory and examines plausible consequences for humanity.

Having just seen Hero (Yimou Zhang), I have to say that this is the best fantasy movie I've ever watched.

The cinematography is matchless(IMO) and the story is solid and told in a refreshingly different way. It is based on true historical figures, places and culture, making the movie more of a Historical Romance/Fantasy than Sci-Fi/Fantasy.

If you haven't seen it, go. Now.

A Cherokee elder sitting with his grandchildren told them,
"In every life there is a terrible fight – a fight between two wolves.
One is evil: he is fear, anger, envy, greed, arrogance, self-pity,
resentment, and deceit. The other is good: joy, serenity, humility,
confidence, generosity, truth, gentleness, and compassion."
A child asked, "Grandfather, which wolf will win?"
The elder looked the child in the eye. "The one you feed."

                  Favorite SciFi Movie

Dipping back into the well of time here...but my favorite scifi movie is the original "The Thing" [from Another World] from 1951. Fantastic flick. Great casting (Dewey Martin - yum), wonderful dialog, and a nifty plot.

It was one of the first non-Disney movies my grandparents allowed me to see back in the '50's. I had been reading science fiction for several years, and this movie was (and still is) the cats pajamas.

The photography and the way that they filmed the fight scenes in that movie are one of the most spectacular and beautiful ones I have ever seen. The colours and the freezeframing movements are absolutely breathtaking.

TRON rules all. It's way underrated and far better than the crass commercialism that inspired it would suggest.

Speaking of Disney, I'm partial to his 1957 version of 20000 Leagues Under the Sea which, despite some lingering silliness, is a faithful and intense adaptation of the book.

The original Terminator. It's dark and dystopian: just the way I like it.

It's been a while since I saw it, but I remember enjoying THX-1138 when it came on television. The new DVD is in the mail now, so I'll refine my opinion when it arrives.

Big Trouble in Little China is supremely bizarre fantasy, good-natured and instantly quotable.

To address some of the other movies discussed in this thread, I tried to sit down and watch Blade Runner but after 30 minutes of absolutely nothing happening on screen except for some cool futuristic cityscapes drifting by, I got bored and wandered off (and I usually enjoy movies that other people consider long and boring).

Donnie Darko is good when it sticks to the sci-fi concepts at its roots. When it drifts off into teen angst territory, a lot of goodwill from this viewer is squandered.

Favorite SciFi movie. Contact. But I could watch Jodie Foster read a telephone book. In fact, I watched an entire documentary about Chinese dam building because she was narrating it.
