L ~ Logopolitans of the planet Logopolis were featured in the episode of the same name. The Logopolitans were a race of strange looking mathematicians concerned with entropy to make sure heat death of the universe did not occur. This was disturbed by the Master and the Logopolitons were killed, although the universe was saved.

L ~ 'Logopolis' - Tom Baker's last story as the Doctor and marks the first appearance of Peter Davison in the role. This serial also marks the first appearance of Janet Fielding as new companion Tegan Jovanka, whilst Nyssa, played by Sarah Sutton and seen in previous serial 'The Keeper of Traken', returns and also joins the Doctor as a companion.

Plot - The Doctor takes Adric and a young air hostess named Tegan Jovanka, who has come aboard the TARDIS by accident, to the planet Logopolis, home of a race of mathematicians whose help he hopes to enlist in reconfiguring the outer shell of the TARDIS.

The mysterious, wraith-like Watcher brings Nyssa from Traken to join them and warns of impending danger - something that is borne out as the Master arrives and kills a number of the Logopolitans.

The Logopolitans' leader, the Monitor, reveals that the universe passed its normal point of heat death long ago and has been preserved only by his people's calculations, which - by way of a signal beamed from a perfect copy of the Pharos Project radio telescope on Earth - have kept open numerous CVEs through which the excess entropy can drain.

This process has now been halted by the Master's interference, and the Doctor is forced to join forces with his arch-enemy in order to save the universe.

Their plan is to use the real Pharos Project to transmit a copy of the Logopolitan program and thus keep open the CVEs, but the Master seizes the opportunity to blackmail the peoples of the universe by threatening them with destruction unless they agree to his demands.

In foiling this scheme the Doctor falls from the gantry of the radio telescope. As he lies injured on the ground the Watcher appears again and merges with the Doctor as he regenerates.

M ~ Monk, The - The Monk is a Renegade Time Lord. He first appeared in the 1965 story The Time Meddler.

The Monk was the possessor of a stolen Mark IV TARDIS – superior to the Doctor's and with a fully functioning chameleon circuit – and said he left the Doctor's then-unnamed home planet some fifty years after the Doctor did.

He liked to meddle in history and to change it for his own amusement and for what he considered to be the better — lending mechanical assistance to the builders of Stonehenge; giving Leonardo da Vinci tips on aircraft design; making money by using time travel to exploit compound interest. When the Doctor first encountered him, the Monk was attempting to prevent the Norman Conquest as part of a plan to guide England into an early age of technological prosperity. On that occasion he wore the guise of a monk in order to gain the trust of the 11th-century locals of Northumbria, hence the name by which he is most often known.

The Doctor stranded the Monk in the 11th century by stealing his TARDIS's dimensional controller, which reduced the interior dimensions of the time machine to minuscule size.

In the story The Daleks' Master Plan, it is revealed that the Monk had eventually restored his ship and tracked the Doctor to a volcanic planet, where he attempted to maroon his enemy by destroying the Doctor's TARDIS's lock. However, the Doctor managed to repair it and next materialised in Egypt, with the Monk still following him. While there the two encountered the Daleks, the Doctor stole the directional unit from the Monk's TARDIS, causing the Monk to lose control over his TARDIS's navigation. The Monk was last seen marooned once more, this time on a desolate icy planet.

Although the Monk never appeared on screen again, he appeared in the New Adventure book No Future. Following that he appeared in flashback sequences in the book Divided Loyalties and an alternate version of him briefly appeared in the book The Quantum Archangel, both of which are part of the Past Doctor Adventures line of books.

The Monk was played by Peter Butterworth.

Q ~ Quantum Archangel, The - Novel featuring the 6th Doctor and Mel Bush.

This book is a sequel to the 1972 TV story The Time Monster and takes place between the 1986 TV story The Trial of a Time Lord and the 1987 TV story Time and the Rani.

The Rutans only appeared in the serial 'Horror of Fang Rock', in which a single Rutan is encountered, though they are mentioned in some serials featuring Sontarans ('The Time Warrior', 'The Sontaran Experiment', 'The Two Doctors' and 'The Poison Sky').

T ~ Tegana - Tegana the Warlord, seen in 'Marco Polo' played by Derren Nesbitt, accompanies Marco Polo on his caravan to Peking in 1289. He urges Polo to have the Doctor and his companions, Susan, Barbara and Ian, killed when they encounter them in the Himalayas, believing them to be fabled "evil spirits" who live on the mountains and can take human form, but Polo accepts them as travellers from England and welcomes them aboard his caravan. Tegana remains highly suspicious of "the magician" and his companions and of their "flying caravan" (the TARDIS). During their travel to Peking, Tegana attempts to bring about the death of Polo and his company by sabotaging their water supply and organising an attack on them by bandits. His attempts fail but the Doctor and his companions realise that Tegana is working against Polo. Tegana's ultimate plan is to assassinate Kublai Khan and seize control of Cathay. Lunging for Kublai Khan with his sword, Tegana misses and kills Khan's Vizier. Convinced of Tegana's duplicity by the Doctor and his companions, Polo arrives in just in time to prevent Tegana from killing Khan too. Polo battles Tegana in a sword fight and eventually disarms him. Khan sentences Tegana to death, but Tegana commits suicide by grabbing a guard's sword and impaling himself.

V ~ Vaughn, Tobias - Tobias Vaughn, played by Kevin Stoney, appeared in 'The Invasion' (1968). He was the head of International Electromatics and he aided the Cybermen invasion of Earth, although he planned to double-cross the Cybermen, taking control of them with the 'cerebration mentor', placing himself in rule over the Earth. He became partially cybernised and was eventually persuaded by the Doctor to aid humanity. He was killed fighting an army of Cybermen shortly before their defeat.

W ~ War Chief, The - The War Chief, was a former friend of the Doctor and later, a renegade Time Lord who assisted the War Lords.

He assisted the War Lords, who had abducted soldiers from wars spread across Earth's history to play in simulated versions of the wars from which they originated. Thinking Humans the most vicious species in the galaxy, the aliens hoped to later pit the survivors against each other and to use the humans to conquer Mutter's Spiral.

The War Chief aided the War Lords by giving them technology to build basic TARDIS-like space-time machines, SIDRATs, which they used to kidnap the human soldiers and travel between era-specific zones which they had created. The War Chief and the Doctor met and recognised each other. The War Chief solicited the Doctor's help to double-cross the War Lords and seize power for themselves. The Doctor pretended to accept the War Chief's offer.

At the same time, the Security Chief of the operation distrusted the War Chief, believing he meant to call in the Time Lords. The two engaged in a series of machinations against each other which ended with the War Chief disgraced, though he shot his rival dead. Unable to resolve matters and return the soldiers to their own times, the Doctor summoned the Time Lords for aid, while the War Lords discovered the War Chief's plans and executed him.

The War Chief appeared in the 1969 story The War Games.

X ~ Xeraphin - The Xeraphin were an ancient species encountered by the Fifth Doctor in the story 'TimeFlight'. Originating from the planet Xeriphas, they possessed immense psychokinetic and scientific powers. The Doctor believed the race to have been wiped out during the crossfire during the Vardon/Kosnax war. Instead, the entire race fled to Earth in an escaping spacecraft. The ship crashed near present day Heathrow some 140 million years ago. When the Xeraphin emerged they built a Citadel to mark their new home but the Xeraphin were so plagued with radiation that they abandoned their original humanoid bodies and transformed into a single bioplasmic gestalt intelligence within a sarcophagus at the heart of the Citadel.

The arrival of the Master coincided with their emergence from the gestalt state when the radiation effects had subsided, and his influence caused the emergence of a split personality of good and evil, each side competing for their tremendous power while yearning to become a proper species once again. The Master, who was stranded on Earth at the time too, succeeded in capturing the Xeraphin as a new power source for his TARDIS. However, the Doctor's intervention meant his nemesis' TARDIS was sent to Xeriphas where events became out of his control.

Y ~ Yana - Professor Yana appeared to be a Human scientist, who was in reality an incarnation of the renegade Time Lord known as the Master.

Physically Human, Yana was an orphan found on the coast of the Silver Devastation with only a fob watch, which in reality held the Time Lord self of the Master. He could never keep time and was always late for things. He spent his life moving from one refugee ship to another and all his life he heard the sound of drums every waking hour as if they were getting closer.

In actuality, he had subsumed his identity into that of a human form and locked his actual Time Lord identity into the fob watch. As the Master later observed, this disguise was so perfect that he forgot who he was, although Yana was plagued by half-remembered fragments of his former life and terrible headaches in which he heard the beat of drums. Yana retained the Master's brilliant intellect and ultimately became responsible for sending the remnants of Humanity to Utopia.

He eventually became friends with the last of Malmooth race, scientist Chantho, thought to be the last of her kind. Together, they worked on the Utopia Project to get the humans from the planet Malcassairo to Utopia.

Yana met the Doctor, Martha Jones, and Captain Jack Harkness who said phrases curiously familiar to him, phrases such as Time Vortex, Time War and Regeneration. Martha made the Professor suspicious of a watch in his possession, so that, hearing voices in his mind that commanded and entreated him; he activated the device and returned to his true identity - as the Master.
