F ~ Fenric - Fenric a.k.a. Hastur the Unspeakable was an immensely powerful sentient force, at least as old as the universe itself and an intelligence of pure evil. Appeared in the serial 'The Curse of Fenric'.

The being known as Fenric was one of two forces, one good, one evil, which were present at the Dawn of Time. Some sources state that Fenric originated not in the beginnings of this universe but, like the other Old Ones, in a universe before this one. These accounts state that Fenric bore (and still bears) the name of Hastur the Unspeakable. The name Fenric came from a mythic figure in Norse mythology. The myths described a monstrous wolf which would, during the final battle between gods and beasts, destroy the world at the end of time.

G ~ Gallifrey - Gallifrey was the homeworld to the Gallifreyans and to the Time Lords, amongst them the Doctor. It was destroyed in the Last Great Time War.

Gallifrey was located in the constellation of Kasterborous, at galactic co-ordinates 10-0-11-0-0 by 0-2 from Galactic Zero Centre. Varying accounts were given of its position. It was said to be either located at the edge of the Mutter's Spiral galaxy or closer to the core. It was believed to be somewhere between 30,000 and 29,000 light years from Earth (a good ten minutes away travelling via a Type-40 TARDIS).

Kasterborous was also known as the Seven Systems, so that Gallifrey had the alternative name, The Shining World of the Seven Systems.

M ~ Macra - The Macra first appear in the 1967 Second Doctor story 'The Macra Terror'. They are an intelligent, giant crab-like species from an unnamed planet colonised by humanity in the future. The Macra invade the control centre of the colony and seize the levers of power without the colonists — including their Pilot — knowing what had happened. Thereafter the Macra only appear at night, when the humans are in their quarters, observing a curfew. They have strong hypnotic powers which alter human perception. They also have the ability to ensure messages are vocalised through electronic apparatus such as television or sensor speakers. Both these tools are used to keep the human colonists under control, believing they are blissfully happy. This provides a cover for the Macra to use the colonists as miners in a vast gas mine. The gas is deadly to the miners but vital to the Macra, enabling them to move more quickly and rejuvenating their abilities. The Second Doctor effects a revolution on the Macra planet and helps engineer an explosion in the control centre, destroying the Macra in charge.

The Macra also feature in the 2007 episode 'Gridlock'. In the episode, some Macra are found to be alive below New New York, a city of New Earth. They live in the thick fog of exhaust gases on the main motorway under the city, tracking the flying cars by their lights and snatching at them when they get too close. The Doctor says that the species is billions of years old and once developed a mighty empire as "the scourge of this galaxy", but the Macra beneath New New York must have devolved into nothing more than beasts.

Q ~ Quark - The Quarks appeared in the Second Doctor serial 'The Dominators' (1969).

The Quarks were used on Dulkis by the Dominators to enslave and terrorise the indigenous Dulcian population to ensure the drilling of bore holes through the planet's crust. The Dominators planned to use their technology to fire seeds down the holes which would force the core to erupt, thus providing a new fuel source for their fleet.

The Quarks were rectangular in shape, with four arms: one pair which folded into the body, the other pair being retractable. On the end of each arm was a solitary claw. The legs extended out below the Quark body. The spherical head was visibly divided into octants; the upper four octants formed the sensory hemisphere, which detected changes in light, heat and motion. At five of the corners of the octants were directional crystal beam transmitters (the sixth corner joined with the robot's extremely short neck). Quarks communicated by means of high-pitched sound waves. Their major weakness was a tendency to run out of energy rather quickly.

R ~ Regeneration - Regeneration was the process by which the Time Lords (and a few other life-forms) could renew themselves physically by changing themselves if worn out by age or has suffered some life-threatening injury or infection or even at will.

The Doctor himself has regenerated ten times and has just started his eleventh life. His first regeneration was brought about by natural causes and his most recent tenth regeneration was brought on by high levels of radiation. Past regenerations for the Doctor have been brought on by force, severe bodily injury caused by a great fall, poisoning, severe head trauma, and gunshot wounds. For the Doctor, regeneration has never been a smooth process and has resulted in disorientation, lapses and complete loss of memory, mood swings, and instability of character like by acting as a past incarnation or displaying moments of violence to name but a few. Other Time Lords such as the Doctor's companion Romana seemed to display a greater control of regeneration as she was able to move between bodies at will before finally deciding on one she liked and showed no after effects of regeneration trauma.

Regeneration was first seen in the 1966 story The Tenth Planet which showed the change from the 1st to the 2nd Doctor.

                              Trivia
                              -------
                              • When actor William Hartnell decided to leave the writers and producers wanting the show to continue and so the idea of regeneration was created and Patrick Troughton was brought in to continue playing the Doctor. The idea of regeneration has allowed 9 other actors to follow on from William Hartnell and Patrick Troughton and, by extension, has allowed Doctor Who to continue going strong 40 odd years later

S ~ Scaroth - Appeared in the serial 'City of Death', also known as Count Carlos Scarlioni and Captain Tancredi, was the last of the Jagaroth and the saviour of his species. He was originally the pilot of the Jagaroth ship that landed on Earth in prehistoric times.

Roughly 4 billion years ago, the Jagaroth ship piloted by Scaroth landed on Earth. Advising not to take off at warp power three, the ship launched and became distraught from the power overload. Being in the warp control cabin, Scaroth was splintered in time when the ship exploded.

Twelve selves of him were scattered across time, though they could communicate through telepathy. The explosion, however, allowed the radioactivity that the primordial ooze needed for the Human race to exist. All throughout time, his selves pushed the Human race forward, showing Humanity fire, inventing the wheel, mapping the stars, and causing the pyramids to be built, all so that his twelfth self could have the technology to go back in time and prevent his splintering in time as well as the death of his race.
