An midi attempts (attempts) to synthesize music electronically. Most (or maybe all?) of the ones I have seen (heard heh) have been made by people playing on a keyboard hooked up to their computer.

The great thing about midis is that the file size is really small (5-30 KB usually). The bad thing is that it is instrumental only, and the music sounds very, well, synthetic. For Doctor Who I don't think this would matter, since in its current incarnation it *purposefully* tries to sound synthetic.
