        Spoiler:
The first Time Lord will be joining Peter Capaldi for Doctor Who Christmas special

        http://www.mirror.co.uk/tv/tv-news/f...peter-10244835

Doctor Who will have a unique time travelling companion in the Christmas Special – in the shape of his first incarnation.

Harry Potter star David Bradley will reprise his role as the 1st Doctor, originally played by William Hartnell. Bradley previously portrayed the actor behind the first timelord for the BBC sci-fi show’s 50th drama An Adventure In Space and Time.

He will flank Peter Capaldi’s 12th Doctor in this year’s festive outing, following the departure of Pearl Mackie as Bill Potts at the end of this series (despite rave reviews after her debut on Saturday).

In the plot, the 1st Doctor has to help the 12th play out his last mission in the TARDIS. The pair must work together to save home planet Gallifrey by moving it to another dimension.

Fans will discover the close-up shot of Capaldi’s eyes from the 50th special, The Day of the Doctor, was actually the start of his own regeneration.

The scene, which was the only glimpse that viewers got of Matt Smith’s successor during the entire episode, will be returned to at Christmas as Capaldi transforms into the 13th Doctor.

Bradley, 73, is best known for his role as Argus Filch in the Potter films and as the suicidal newsagent in the first series of Broadchurch.

He first played Hartnell’s Doctor in drama-documentary An Adventure in Time and Space.

An insider revealed: “David was convincing as Hartnell, it’s exciting he’s back.
"I have never understood why it should be necessary to become irrational in order to prove that you care... or why it should be necessary to prove it at all."

Oh, now that would be seriously cool.

Long before you and I were born, others beat these benches with their empty cups,
To the night and its stars, to the here and now with who we are.

Another sunrise with my sad captains, with who I choose to lose my mind,
And if it's all we only pass this way but once, what a perfect waste of time.

Doctor Who to release a “nail-biting” immersive version of an upcoming episode

The fourth episode of this year’s run will have a special “3D audio” version on BBC iPlayer

Doctor Who always does scary episodes well – just ask the sofa cushions of any longtime viewer – but an upcoming story in the sci-fi series this year may well be the most terrifying tale yet, thanks to special audio technology that will put you in the heart of the pulse-pounding action.

According to the BBC, a special “binaural” version of upcoming fourth episode Knock Knock (written by Mike Bartlett and featuring evil floor-creaking termites) will be released on BBC iPlayer after the episode airs on BBC1 on the 6th May, with the alternate edition featuring “a 3D surround sound effect for anyone wearing headphones, placing them at the heart of the action in this nail-biting episode.”

This basically means that the sounds of the episode will be manipulated to appear that they are coming from anywhere in three-dimensional space, including behind, above and below the listener (it’s currently unclear whether the binaural episode will also work with surround-sound speakers, though 3D audio effects often do).

In effect, the 3D sound will trick your ears into thinking that the terrifying creaks and scuttles of Knock Knock’s monsters (pictured above) are actually happening all around you, with your own home infested just as surely as new companion Bill’s is in the episode.

So in other words, any fan who tunes in to the special iPlayer version of the episode with their headphones plugged in will find themselves living the dream of feeling like they’re actually inside a Doctor Who story – only to find it could instead be a terrifying nightmare they’d rather escape.

After all, series showrunner Steven Moffat has described this as a “very creepy and scary” episode – so be careful what you wish for…

Doctor Who continues on BBC1 on Saturdays at 7.20pm

                Thin Ice - Publicity
Tuesday, 25 April, 2017 - Reported by Chuck Foster

                http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2017/04...417170008.html

The BBC have released a number of new publicity images to promote this week's episode of Doctor Who, Thin Ice:

                Thin Ice
Written by Sarah Dollard and directed by Bill Anderson

In Regency England, beneath the frozen Thames, something is stirring.

The Doctor and Bill arrive at the last of the great frost fairs, and find themselves investigating a string of impossible disappearances - people have been vanishing on the ice! Bill is about to discover that the past is more like her world than she expected, and that not all monsters come from outer space...

The Doctor is played by Peter Capaldi, Bill by Pearl Mackie and Nardole by Matt Lucas.

Profile images feature Austin Tailer as Spider, Ellie Shenker as Dot, Tomi May as Dowell, Kishaina Thiruselvan as Harriet, Badger Skelton as Perry, Asiatu Koroma as Kitty, and Nicholas Burns as Lord Sutcliffe.

This Bank Holiday weekend sees Doctor Who sitting between Pointless Celebrities and Casualty, with primary opposition on ITV being Take Me Out and Britain's Got Talent. World Snooker continues on BBC2, whilst Channel 4 serve up The Restoration Man followed by Walking Through Time; Channel 5 will be showing new episodes of two incarnations of NCIS, whilst Sky 1 have The Simpsons followed by Inside the Freemasons, and the Sky Movie Premiere in the time-slot is X-Men: Apocalypse. The previous weeks have seen Doctor Who achieve third place for The Pilot and fourth for Smile, with Britain's Got Talent the most-watched show of both evenings followed by the BBC's All Round to Mrs Brown's - last weekend also had the live FA Cup Semi-Final football game gaining slightly more viewers than Doctor Who, but this weekend doesn't suggest any other surprises ratings-wise!

BBC One continues to show Doctor Who at 7;20pm, with BBC First simulcasting the episode across the Middle-East - see the table below for other broadcasts around the world. Meanwhile, Danish broadcaster DR has now schedueled the series on its DR3 channel, with The Pilot receiving its premiere at 8:00pm CEST on Saturday.

New Audio Torchwood Series from Big Finish
Sunday, 07 May, 2017 - Reported by Marcus

                              http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2017/05...-from-big.html

                              Big Finish
has announced that Torchwood will be back for a brand new series of audio adventures with Torchwood: Aliens Among Us...

The new series, revealed at the DWAS convention The Capitol II, will follow the events of Miracle Day, and will see the Torchwood team reunited. Captain Jack, Gwen and Rhys will be joined by new characters co-created and overseen by series creator Russell T Davies.

In this series, Captain Jack and Gwen Cooper have restarted Torchwood in Cardiff, home of the original Torchwood Three. But it's in a very different Cardiff. Something terrible's happened to the city. With every day getting darker, will Torchwood need to adopt a whole new approach?

Producer of Torchwood Season 5, James Goss, talked about the new Torchwood team and Russell T Davies’ involvement.
Russell's been wonderfully involved in the continuation of Torchwood. We came up with some characters and ideas and he very kindly, very politely said 'Marvellous, but no. Howabout...?'. And that's what lead to Jack and Gwen being joined by Mr Colchester (Paul Clayton), Ng (Alexandria Riley), Tyler (Jonny Green) and the enigmatic Orr (Sam Béart). Who are they? What part do they have to play in the future of Torchwood? And can they save Cardiff from an invasion that's already been lost?

This is an ambitious series for Big Finish - an entire season of Torchwood! There are some great scripts by some new writers, but there are also some familiar old faces - of course Rhys and Andy are in it, but there'll be a few other surprises, including an appearance by someone who just has to be, has to be dead...

This new series of Torchwood will be released in three boxsets, the first being out in August. Torchwood Series 5.2 will follow in October and 5.3 will complete the season in the new year.

                                Geoffrey Bayldon 1923-2017
Thursday, 11 May, 2017 - Reported by Marcus

                                http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2017/05...1923-2017.html

The actor Geoffrey Bayldon has died at the age of 93

Geoffrey Bayldon was best known for his portrayal of Catweazle, the eccentric 11th-century wizard who was the star of the LWT children's series produced in the early 1970's, as well as playing the Crowman in the Jon Pertwee series Worzel Gummidge.

Bayldon was considered for the role of the Doctor twice. First when the series was commissioned in 1963. He turned the offer down, worried about playing such an old character and not wanting to commit to the then unknown series. When Hartnell left the role in 1966, Bayldon was again the frame to play The Doctor, but once more decided against joining the programme. It was not until 1979 that he eventually did appear in the series when he played Organon the astrologer in the Tom Baker story The Creature from the Pit

He would eventually voice the Doctor in the Big Finish Doctor Who Unbound stories Auld Mortality and A Storm of Angels.

Bayldon was born in Leeds in 1923. He joined the Royal Air Force and had a period studying architecture, before fulfilling his dream of becoming an actor, training at the Old Vic Theatre School. He was a regular face on British television from 1950's onwards appearing in Sword of Freedom, The Case of the Frightened Lady, An Age of Kings, The Victorians, The Massingham Affair, The Woman in White, Z Cars and The Adventures of Robin Hood where he played Count de Severne.

In 1970 he accepted the role of Catweazle, first appearing on Sundays afternoons in February 1970. It was a role that would endear him to a generation of children. The character, an eccentric medieval wizard trapped in the 20th century, amused and delighted both adults and children alike. In 2010 Bayldon spoke about the role.

It was a new idea, at the time of boring kitchen-sink drama. Everything was serious, working-class, and the idea of magic didn't even occur, let alone humour.

With the two together I thought the world would be mine!
