        Details of DWM 489 - http://www.doctorwhomagazine.com/doc...-magazine-489/

The next issue of Doctor Who Magazine is published tomorrow (23rd July), and features an interview with sixth Doctor Colin Baker, the Doctor who never had a proper regeneration story - until now! Talking about recording The Last Adventure for Big Finish, he said:
Big Finish came to me, and said, ‘If we write you a really good story, and if we released your seven cats which we’ve kidnapped, which are suspended above this flame getting lower and lower, will you perhaps do this story?’ … and I reluctantly agreed, and my cats are safe!

Commenting on why he needed a little persuasion to record the story, and why he changed his mind:
Oh, the idea of a release. A release from the tension of saying 'no’ repeatedly. And… it’s Big Finish! That’s what changed my mind.
        Also in this issue:

        * UNDER SURVEILLANCE! DWM tells the remarkable story of writer Malcolm Hulke, the creator of the Time Lords, Silurians and Sea Devils – and why he came under under scrutiny by MI5…
        * TROUBLED TEEN: Ellis George, the actress who plays cheeky schoolgirl Courtney Woods talks to DWM about travelling in the TARDIS, and what its like to be a teenager starring in Doctor Who.
        * TOP OF THE POPS! The much-anticipated results of the 2014 DWM Season Survey are in! Discover which story from Peter Capaldi’s début season topped the poll, and who won the accolade for best writer, what was the favourite monster, and more…
        * THE MONSTER OF PELADON! The Fact of Fiction takes a close look at the 1974 serial The Monster of Peladon, and digs deep to unearth fascinating new facts about this Third Doctor adventure.

Sherlock and Doctor Who writer Steven Moffat attacks plans for BBC

Green paper is ‘wretched’ and ‘wrong’ and Conservatives should not be allowed to turn off the people that are criticising them.

              http://www.theguardian.com/media/201...P=share_btn_tw

The man behind some of the BBC’s biggest shows, including Sherlock and Doctor Who, has hit out at the government’s plans for the corporation.

Steven Moffat said the BBC was “a beacon of quality” and described the recent green paper on its future as “wretched” and “wrong”.

He told The Stage: “If we allow, basically, the Tories to turn off the people that are criticising them, which is what is happening, I can’t see how we’d get it back.”

Unveiling the green paper last week, culture secretary John Whittingdale said the review of the BBC’s royal charter would look at whether the broadcaster should continue to be “all things to all people” or have a more “precisely targeted” mission.

He sparked speculation the BBC may be told to cut back on popular programming which competes with shows available on commercial broadcasters or to reduce its online presence and he raised questions about the future of the licence fee, suggesting that the BBC could switch to a subscription service in the long run.

The BBC Trust, the corporation’s governing body, announced on Wednesday it would ask audiences for their views on the BBC and said the broadcaster was built on “a broad mission” including news coverage and entertainment.

It also said the current 10-year charter could be extended by another year, adding: “We suggest including a legal obligation in the next charter for government to consult publicly with the BBC’s regulator as part of any funding negotiations, and to seek parliamentary approval for any change to the BBC’s funding.”

              Colin Baker defends the BBC

              From DWM 489 -

"Oh my heart breaks for the BBC," Colin laments. "There are so many things about our past that I realise how lucky we are, the people of my age who grew up through the 1950s and 1960s. Having the BBC is right at the centre of that. When it was the Home Service and the Light Programme, and BBC1... and it was just miraculous that there were people out there making radio programmes and television programmes to communicate with us."

"And the licence fee? Of course it's worth it! We should cherish the BBC like a pearl in the middle of the great shell of Britain. It breaks my hearty that the Conservative Party is clearly hell-bent on removing its autonomy and its funding, so it will turn out to be just like ITV and Sky, and everything else, funded by advertising and controllable by people with lots of money. Yes, there may have been, at some point in the past, a left wing bias. There are worse biases! .... If you think people like Jeremy Paxman are left-lwing, you need to go and have a lobotomy!"

                  http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-...o-fanboy-he-is

Any Doctor Who fan knows that Peter Capaldi is not just an actor who happened to take on the role of the Time Lordhis love of the show from an early age has been well documented – but sometimes it’s worth just taking a step back and considering what a gift it is to have someone who knows and loves the show so well playing the Doctor.

As series nine approaches, this new interview from Doctor Who: The Fan Show is a timely reminder that Capaldi is, above all else, a massive Doctor Who fan – and when you get a Doctor Who fan started, it’s hard to get them to stop…

In the video below, Capaldi talks about the monsters he’d bring back and has a fair few ideas – Mondasian Cybermen are in there, of course – but when he’s asked which episode he’d stick in the DVD player on a rainy day, it seems as if his answer might never end, ranging around new and classic Who, taking in his assessment of several of his fellow Doctors and, in the end, covering pretty much the entire Doctor Who back catalogue. What a great rainy day in that would be…

BARB to measure Online Viewing from September

                    http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2015/07...ce=twitterfeed

The Broadcasters' Audience Research Board, BARB, is, for the first time, to release official figures showing the level of UK viewing through on-demand and live-streamed content through online TV Player apps.

BARB provides the official ratings for the UK TV Industry. The final figures currently reflect those who watch live or on catch up within one week of broadcast. They do not include those watching on their computers via the iPlayer. The BBC's own research, Live +7, shows up to 10% of the audience for Doctor Who currently watches online and is not counted in the official figures.

The first BARB TV Player Report will to be released in September and will be the first set of BARB data to focus on viewing that takes place on computer devices such as laptops, desktops, tablets and smartphones. It will report on viewing activity at a device level, rather than a person level, and rely on data that is generated from software code that has been developed by Kantar Media and implemented by broadcasters.

This solution is one of the most advanced audience measurement systems for online TV viewing in the world. The data will be an important building block for the delivery of Project Dovetail, the hybrid measurement system that will that is intended to deliver full cross-platform reporting of audiences.

Justin Sampson, Chief Executive at BARB, said:
We're excited to be introducing our customers to the TV Player Report. It's a significant innovation from BARB and the result of close collaboration with broadcasters. At its heart is the generation of a census-level dataset that will provide our customers with a gold standard measure of online TV viewing.

US cinema listings have appeared for a limited two day event taking place in September. An exclusive “prequel” (yes, they’re still calling them that) entitled “The Doctor’s Meditation” for Series 9 is promised.

This event is US only. BBC Worldwide told Sci-Fi Bulletin that “Due to the number of events taking place for Doctor Who this year including the Symphonic Spectacular and the Doctor Who Festival, we decided against showing the episodes in UK cinema.”
Wouldn't you think that they would have learned by now that this sort of thing does not go down well with UK fans. Not every UK fan can afford to go to see the Symphonic Spectacular or the Festival. But a lot more people can afford to go to the cinema.

Or will they release the "Prequel" on itunes again, so UK fans have to pay to see it, while the rest of the world gets it free?

‘Doctor Who’ star says re-used location in Season 8 is significant

                          http://www.cultbox.co.uk/news/headli...is-significant

Michelle Gomez has teased that it is not a coincidence that her Doctor Who character made her debut in a location previously used in the show.

                          Spoiler:

Gomez first appeared as Missy, later revealed to be the Master, in a garden at the end of Season 8’s feature-length opener, ‘Deep Breath’, last August.

Many fans recognised the garden from key scenes in 2011’s ‘The Girl Who Waited’ episode.

Asked by Erik Nagel if there was a link, Gomez commented: “Oh, there’s no coincidence in Doctor Who. Everything’s connected, that’s what makes it really spooky in a way.”

She hinted: “Yes, there’s a connection yet to be revealed.”

The location also featured in CBBC’s Doctor Who spin-off The Sarah Jane Adventures in 2009’s ‘The Eternity Trap”.
