Bill Nighy could have been our 9th Doctor.

I think Bill Nighy would have been a great Doctor, regardless of his number.

                    Dalek Documentary Discovered

                    http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2012/06...cumentary.html

Material from a long lost documentary featuring behind the scenes footage from the 1966 film, Dalek Invasion of Earth: 2150 , has been discovered in a private collection in Wales.

The recovered edition of the 1960s teen culture show A Whole Scene Going contains a sneak-peak into the making of the big-screen Doctor Who adventure. The brief clip shows movie Doctor Peter Cushing preparing to battle the Daleks. The black and white footage, taken on the set of the movie, also captures director Gordon Flemyng behind camera as he talks with stunt-men and plans out the movie's climatic final scenes.

Interspersed with the footage is an interview with Flemyng — who died in 1995, aged 61 — revealing that he preferred making “entertainment pictures”as opposed to more high-brow films, but “didn't take them any less seriously”.

Although the BBC wiped the master-tape of A Whole Scene Going, a copy of the magazine show was made and found its way on to the collector's circuit. Classic TV organisation Kaleidoscope, which recovered the 16mm film print in conjunction with the Tim Disney Archive, said the find will "delight" Doctor Who and vintage music fans alike.

                    Chris Perry of Kaleidoscope said:
A Whole Scene Going is an exciting TV find. For Doctor Who fans there's a fascinating glimpse into the making of feature film Dalek Invasion of Earth: 2150 A.D., showing Peter Cushing as the Doctor on the set along with director Gordon Flemyng and lots of Daleks. For music lovers there are priceless performances by classic British beat band the Spencer Davis Group as well as American singer/songwriter Judy Collins. Sixties pop shows were routinely shown live or wiped after transmission so it's great to find one that slipped past the eraser's magnet!
Tim Disney of the Tim Disney Archive said:
How this print came into existence or found it's way to a Welsh village, we'll never know. However, one theory is that it could have been film recorded by BBC Wales from the network feed down the line from London for transmission at a later date.

A Whole Scene Going also features a rare interview with the Spencer Davis Group, who perform their chart-topping single "Somebody Help Me Now".
Kaleidoscope and the TDA — who bought the film print privately from the collector — are currently in the process of returning a digital copy to the BBC Archive. However fans will get the chance to see the recovered footage for the first time in more than four decades at Kaleidoscope's next screening event, taking place in Stourbridge, West Midlands, on Saturday, 9th June.

Tim Disney of the TDA added:
Doctor Who was not the primary draw for us in recovering this programme, but the content of the programme as a whole — the exciting period of popular culture it reflects and it's place in the history of British television.Thankfully, after the collector discovered he had a unique TV recording he was keen to ensure it would be returned to the BBC archives, turning down silly money offers to deal instead with Kaleidoscope and the TDA.
A clip from the recovered show can be seen at the Tim Disney Archive. http://www.timdisneyarchive.com/

Which former Doctor would you most like to see return

Poll at the link -> http://www.atvtoday.co.uk/which-form...ee-return-633/

At Collectormania 18, held in Milton Keynes, Tom Baker said he is open to the possibility of returning to Doctor Who for the 50th anniversary next year. So with that in mind which former Doctor would you most like to see back for the landmark anniversary?

For obvious reason’s the poll is limited to those actors still with us – I’m sure we don’t need to explain why. Yes current technology could very well do marvellous things and create holograms of the first three Doctors – and that would be most welcome to – but for the purpose of the poll we’re concentrating on Doctors 4 through to 10.

Tom Baker holds the record for the actor to play the Doctor for the longest on-screen clocking up seven years between 1974 and 1981. After leaving Doctor Who he declined to return in 1983 for the 20th anniversary story The Five Doctors so footage from the unbroadcast story Shada was used instead. However, he did reprise his role for the Children in Need special Dimensions in Time in 1993 and has recently donned the 4th Doctor’s hat once again for several Big Finish audio plays. As Baker has said he is open to returning surely the BBC would be stupid not to take him up on that?

Peter Davison took over from Tom Baker in 1981 and inherited what has widely been dubbed a “crowded TARDIS”. Under producer John Nathan Turner the series returned somewhat to its roots with three companions and more continuity between adventures – each usually linking into one another. Davison has, of course, reprised his role on several occasions most notable for the Children in Need special Time Crash a few years ago opposite David Tennant. The special was written by Steven Moffat who just happens to be Doctor Who’s show-runner now!

Colin Baker became the sixth Doctor in 1984 and did tenure in the show was notable troubled. Despite the show’s continued popularity it was unexpected cancelled in 1985 by Michael Grade who didn’t like the series – feeling it was cheap looking compared to American imports. Rather than give Doctor Who a bigger budget with which to compete Grade axed it but a big press campaign saved it and Doctor Who returned in 1986. Baker left the role following his second full season but returned for Dimensions in Time in 1993 and has continued to play the role for Big Finish audio dramas.

Sylvester McCoy made his debut in 1987 and while the show underwent something of a creative revival during his tenure – becoming darker and more adult in tone – Doctor Who struggled to keep viewers. In 1989 it was cancelled by the BBC though they, at the time, merely insisted the series was on an extended production break. That break lasted until the 1996 television movie in which McCoy reprised his role for the first part of the movie before handing over to his successor Paul McGann.

To date Paul McGann has only made one on-screen appearance as the 8th Doctor in the 1996 TV Movie which actually rated quite well in the UK but didn’t fare well in America and so no full series followed. McGann has reprised the the character in numerous Big Finish audio plays. Another on-screen outing for the 8th Doctor is long overdue though and what better occasion than the 50th anniversary? McGann has indicated he would be willing to return if asked….

Christopher Eccleston was the first Doctor of the revived series though he was 9th overall. Eccleston played the 9th Doctor for a single season in 2005 but his portrayal helped secure the success of the series. He has since indicated though that he is not interested in returning at all. Fans would like to see the actor back for the 50th anniversary but at present it seems unlikely but that doesn’t mean he shouldn’t feature in our poll!

David Tennant took over from Christopher Eccleston and became hugely popular as the 10th Doctor. Tennant’s portrayal helped keep Doctor Who firmly in the public affections as ratings soared during his time. The departure of the actor in 2009 was a big deal generating lots of press coverage and millions tuned in for his last appearance. Tennant may have left Doctor Who behind but he certainly hasn’t forgotten the series and has already said he would return.

(I personally voted for Paul McGann as I'd love to see the 8th Doctor in a proper TV story. Though of course if the option had been available I would have liked to vote for all of them - Blen)

                              TOM’S APPOINTMENT FOR DOCTOR’S 50TH

                              http://www.express.co.uk/features/view/324944

FORMER Doctor Who star Tom Baker is being lined up to make a dramatic return to the television series to mark the show’s 50th anniversary, Day & Night can reveal.

The actor, who starred as the Time Lord from 1974 to 1981, has been approached about reprising the role when the show celebrates its half century in 2013.

Famed for his character’s trademark scarf and curly hair, Baker, now 78, will join forces with current Time Lord Matt Smith, 29. “It will be fitting to have Tom back to mark the 50 years,” says a show insider. “He was a big part of the show’s success and is much-loved by the fans.”

Having successfully played the character for seven years, Liverpool born Baker, who spent six years as a monk before losing his faith in his youth, was initially keen to distance himself from his most famous role.

He refused to be involved in the 20th anniversary show in 1983 with producers bizarrely replacing him with a waxwork dummy when his fellow Doctors appeared for the publicity photograph.

In recent years he again came to prominence after agreeing to narrate the Little Britain series for comedians David Walliams and Matt Lucas.

Doctor Who bosses are remaining tight-lipped about their plans for next year but there is speculation the anniversary series could also prove to be Smith’s last as he prepares to pursue new roles.
