    Mark Gatiss in Series Six
Wednesday, June 01, 2011 - Posted by Chuck Foster

It has been reported that Mark Gatiss will be appearing in episode thirteen of Doctor Who, the finale of the second half of the current series due to be broadcast later in the year. The news comes as part of an interview with one of his co-stars, interviewed by Cultbox (note: the link contains a number of possible spoilers for A Good Man Goes To War as well as episode thirteen).

Gatiss was previously announced as one of the writers for this series, with his script - directed by Richard Clark (The Doctor's Wife) - originally slated as episode three before being moved into the second half as episode nine.

Earlier contributions to the series include the scripts for The Unquiet Dead, The Idiot's Lantern and Victory of the Daleks, plus an appearance as Professor Lazarus in The Lazarus Experiment; he also provided the uncredited voice of "Danny Boy" in his Dalek tale. He was the narrator for the second series of the behind-the-scenes programme Doctor Who Confidential.

He is one of the few people to contribute both behind and in front of the camera for Doctor Who.

      Doctor Who Magazine 435
Thursday, June 02, 2011 - Posted by Chuck Foster

In the latest edition of Doctor Who Magazine (out today), actress Alex Kingston talks about River Song, and about having to keep the secret of her back-to-front identity:

Right up until the reveal, people are enjoying trying to guess. Is she really on the Doctor’s side? Or is there something more to her? Is she actually not such a good person? Even once we know who River is, I don’t think we’ve lost her potential for adventure.

      Also in this issue:
      • And Baby Makes Four! DWM takes a peak at what we can expect from Steven Moffat’s game-changing episode, A Good Man Goes to War. Where is Amy? Who is the Eye Patch Lady? What is River’s secret? All will be revealed... or will it...?

      • Have You Met My Wife? Suranne Jones talks exclusively to DWM about what it was like to play Idris – the TARDIS given physical form, in the amazing episode, The Doctor's Wife, written by the award-winning Neil Gaiman.

      • Goodbye Sarah Jane... Following the sad news of the death of Elisabeth Sladen, DWM commemorates the much-loved actress and the character of Sarah Jane Smith that she created. Doctor Who’s commander-in-chief, Steven Moffat reflects on the enduring popularity of the character in his latest Production Notes; and former Doctor Who showrunner and executive producer of The Sarah Jane Adventures, Russell T Davies shares his fond memories of working with Elisabeth. Plus, an obituary and a selection of the many letters received from readers.

      • Seeing Double! DWM braved the biting cold to report on the disturbing two-part adventure, The Rebel Flesh/The Almost People and was able to talk exclusively to the cast and crew, including author Matthew Graham, actor Raquel Cassidy, and director Julian Simpson.

      • Gentlemen Adventurers From 1977’s The Talons of Weng-Chiang to their own series of adventures on audio, actors Christopher Benjamin and Trevor Baxter talk exclusively to DWM about playing Victorian detectives Jago and Litefoot.

      • End Of An Era As the 60s draw to a close, so too does the tenure of the Second Doctor as COUNTDOWN TO 50 reaches Series Six which introduced both UNIT and the Time Lords to Doctor Who mythology.

      • Running Out Of Time! Amy and the Doctor confront nuns with guns when they land inside an abandoned alien vessel where time is the enemy in Apotheosis, the first part of a new comic strip adventure by Jonathan Morris with art by Dan McDaid.

      • Return Of An Old Acquaintance... The Time Team take a trip to the subterranean layer of tycoon and extraterrestrial collector, Henry van Statten to see the Doctor confronting an old enemy. Will Dalek be to their taste?

      • Gone To Pieces... Summoned by the White Guardian, the Doctor is charged with the mission of finding the six segments of the Key to Time and the Time Lady Romana is assigned to help him in his task. Fact of Fiction examines The Ribos Operation from 1978, and tracks down some fascinating facts about the adventure.

      • Of Gods And Men... Should the Doctor be an all-powerful, god-like being or just a clever chap with an inquisitive streak? Toby Hadoke and Johnny Candon take sides and fight their respective corners in A Battle Of Wits...

PLUS! A FREE giant-size, double-sided poster, all the latest official news, previews, reviews, competitions, more madness from the Watcher, another prize-winning crossword, and much, much more!

Doctor Who Magazine is available from all good newsagents and supermarkets from Thursday 2nd June.

The Reign Of Terror episodes to be animated (UPDATED)
Thursday, June 02, 2011 - Posted by Chuck Foster

Early character study from REIGN OF TERROR based on available promotional still (2|Entertain, via yfrog)

2|Entertain have announced that the missing episodes four and five of the William Hartnell adventure The Reign of Terror are to be animated as part of the forthcoming DVD, which the company previously reported would provisionally be released late 2012.

The animators for the project have been named as Big Finish - long-term Doctor Who audio producers, and whose Real Time and Shada adventures were animated for the BBC Doctor Who website - and animation company Theta Sigma, whose Thetamation is described as "a totally new style of animation, a hybrid of the classic anime styles of the 80s and high-technology".

The story is one of the remaining to have its surviving episodes released on DVD, leaving only those of the incomplete The Tenth Planet and The Ice Warriors still to be scheduled. Prior to this, The Invasion received a similar treatment in 2006 when its missing episodes one and four were re-created by award-winning animators Cosgrove Hall.

The Sarah Jane Adventures - Series 5 Episode Titles Revealed
Posted by Kirsty at 11:14PM on Thursday, June 2nd 2011
            Wonderful news!

It was announced in Doctor Who Magazine today that the BBC has confirmed that the final episodes of The Sarah Jane Adventures, recorded in 2010, will air in the autumn – most likely to be October – on CBBC and BBC One. No change there then.

Russell T Davies told Doctor Who Magazine “We had completed only stories 1, 2 and 3 from series five, each a two-parter in the traditional format. The first one is called Sky, by Phil Ford, the second is The Curse of Clyde Langer, also by Phil and the third is The Man Who Wasn't There by Gareth Roberts. All starring Lis alongside Daniel Anthony as Clyde, Anjli Mohindra as Rani and with Tommy Knight as Luke returning for a full two-episode appearance in the last story – so the gang's all together at the end.”

A Good Man Goes To War - clip scam warning
Friday, June 03, 2011 - Posted by Chuck Foster

A number of Internet Security sites have reported that several marketing scams are in progress using the promise of a clip from this Saturday's mid-series finale A Good Man Goes To War as a premise to visit their sites and potentially collate personal information.

The scams running on YouTube purport to point to a video elsewhere that is too large for the site, but then require the visitor to perhaps fill out a survey or sign up to an offer before gaining access to the alleged clip.

GFI Software security researcher Chris Boyd commented:
The same thing happened when the last series finale was due to air. There was also a bit of an issue with various Doctor Who games doing the rounds, too. As always: avoid.

Everything we’ve seen so far is the usual fake video/survey nonsense, but there could well be malware in the offing between now and Saturday.

Please note: the only official clips from A Good Man Goes To War are available free to watch courtesy of the BBC.

All except that Maria girl. And no sign of K-9 either.

I wonder if the final episodes will be released in a sort of "memorial DVD" for Elisabeth Sladen, or tacked onto the end of the season 4 DVD set.

                Doctor: " *Brainfart* ".

I'm not sure what a DVD release for Series 5 would look like. 3 stories (6 episodes) seems an awful small amount to dedicate a boxset release too. Having said that, there wasn't that much for Series 3 of Torchwood so I'm sure that something will be worked out. With it being the final series, it might be an idea to pad a boxset out with a special features disc full of featurettes, interviews, trailers, bloopers, etc.

A Good Man Goes to War - Overnight Ratings

                      http://www.doctorwhonews.net/2011/06...es-to-war.html

5.5 million viewers watched episode seven of Doctor Who: A Good Man Goes To War, according to unofficial overnight figures.

The final story before the mid season break attracted 25.4% of the overnight audience.

Doctor Who was the sixth most watched programme of the day with ITV1 taking the top five places and Britain's Got Talent results show winning the day with 12.5 million watching. The new talent show Popstar to Operastar and Euro 2012 Qualifier Live also beat the Doctor, although Doctor Who had higher figures than the football during the period they were both on together. This was after the game itself had finished, while post-match analysis was being broadcast.

The weekly chart was dominated by ITV1 which won every one on the top twenty places, thanks to the daily showing of Britain's Got Talent. Although Doctor Who is currently 28th for the week on overnight figures it is the 3rd most watched show on the BBC for the week.

Official figures for the story, which will include those time shifting the programme and should see the programme enter the top twenty, should be available next Sunday

Quick question - I notice that "Season 6, Pt. 1" is due for release on DVD and Blu-Ray in late July.

Do we know if this is a vanilla release or one with bells and whistles?

Might be a full release. I've noticed that, we didn't get volume releases before a boxset release like previous years. It makes sense to have half of the whole kit and kaboodle in the first part of season 32's overall boxset.

                              May iPlayer Requests
Monday, June 06, 2011 - Posted by Marcus

Doctor Who took the top three places of the most requested programmes on the BBC iPlayer in May.

Top of the chart was the Neil Gaiman written episode, The Doctor's Wife, which was requested over 1.22 million times during the month. Close behind was The Curse of the Black Spot with 1.21 million requests and Day of the Moon with 1.18 million requests.

The highest non Who programme was The Apprentice Episode 2 which came in fourth with 1.18 million requests. The Rebel Flesh was fifth with 1.10 million requesting and The Almost People crept into the top ten with 0.84 million requesting, despite only being available for the last four days of the month.

The most requested programme this year is still Episode 2 of the Matt Lucas, David Walliams comedy, Come Fly With Me which has been requested 1.86 million times. Hot on its heals is The Impossible Astronaut with 1.79 million requests so far, needing just another 70,000 before it goes off line at the end of this week to take the top place. Day of the Moon is currently 6th for the year.

Nothing has yet come near toppling the Matt Smith début episode, The Eleventh Hour, which still holds the record for the most requested programme ever with over 2.5 million requests.
