    From the words of Mr. Lucas in the 1994 edition of Splinter of the Mind's Eye(the first EU novel):

    "After Star Wars was released, it became apparent that my story—however many films it took to tell—was only one of thousands that could be told about the characters who inhabit its galaxy. But these were not stories I was destined to tell. Instead they would spring from the imagination of other writers, inspired by the glimpse of a galaxy that Star Wars provided. Today it is an amazing, if unexpected, legacy of Star Wars that so many gifted writers are contributing new stories to the Saga."
    Exactly my point, Splinter of the Mind's Eye (1978), the first EU novel, was not canon with the release of The Empire Strikes Back (1980). There is a precedent to the EU not being canon from way back then. "one fo thousands that could be told" does not translate into the material becoming canon.

    've always considered the Expanded Universe to be canon, regardless of what George Lucas says.
    This is the tired tag-line of all EU fans. Without Lucas there is no EU, no Star Wars, period. What Lucas says is canon is canon.

    The same George Lucas who has constantly changed his mind on things regarding this franchise, there was a time when he said there would be more movies, then he said there wouldn't be, then he said there would be. Lucasfilm tried to have a canon, but it was difficult when George kept changing his mind about anything and everything Star Wars.
    He's entitled to change his mind, but he has never stated that the EU is canon nor does it take precedent over his work. Without his work, there is no EU.

        The original EU was not canon. Some of you may not remember these, let alone born yet, so take a look:

        http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0361243/?ref_=fn_al_tt_4

        All of the above were all officially licensed but never considered canon; why should the rest of the EU be any different.

        P.S. Many elements from the above sources (see links) were lifted for the six films and Clone Wars 3D series. Here is but a few ideas that made it into the original and prequel trilogies:

        • Boba Fett first appears in the Holiday Special;
        • Kashyyyk first appears in the Holiday Special;
        • The Boonta Eve classic appears in Droids as the Boonta Eve speeder race;
        • General Grievous’ wheel bike also comes from Droids.

        And later on, Coruscant was lifted from Heir to the Empire (1991), etc, etc. So I would expect more EU ideas to be salvaged and reused in Episodes VII-IX as well. The lifted ideas become canon, but the EU itself is not canon.

            I won't miss the Yuuzhan Vong plotline, that's for sure.

            I've read half of the New Jedi Order series, the whole X-Wing series, I'm almost done with the legacy series and will probably read the Fate of the Jedi, and I've read a few other books plus the Dawn of the Jedi material and have enjoyed all the games made this century.

            That said, I don't really feel bad about it. The books are still there, and yes I wish they'd just continue the "legends" things without cancelling planned material, I won't miss a lot of things from the EU that I wasn't particularly fond of *cough*Chewie *cough*

            I do think that the main thrust behind this is that they want to streamline it all. It's easy to react to what happens, but Disney has two choices. One is to keep a complicated self contradicting schizophrenic narrative that is the EU or reboot it and make it consistent and actually all fit together with what people see on the screen (big or small). Besides, it's not like they won't recycle old favorites, sure not all of them will be recycled, but something is something.

              I really hope Kyle Katarn is one of those reused aspects - since he's my favourite Star Wars character of all time.

                Kyle Katarn and Mara Jade, those are the ones I'd like to see. Mara Jade doesn't need to be in a relationship with Luke...just saying. She could easily have gone down a different route yet still be light sided. Though...I did like her as an Imperial agent.

                    It was Jedi Outcast, the Jedi Knight series, and the Dark Forces series.

                      I'm not a Star Wars 'fan'. But I do enjoy it... I kinda just wanted to add my perception on this. Which is by no means a perception that I would expect or wish others to agree with.

                      Since reading an article detailing the shift of EU work to 'Legends' Status, I'm actually far more motivated to pick up a couple of 'Legends' books. Why? Precisely because they're uncanonical. I quite like the idea of being able to read an original Wars novel, fully aware that it's effectively standalone and that I don't especially need to think about how it's connected to eveything else.. Like I said, an odd view - and I'm SURE I wouldn't feel that way if they did that to MY expanded universe in Doctor Who... but still...
