Alex Kurtzman and showrunner Michael Chabon reveal a little more...

    1. Yes, Picard is going back into space. Strangely enough for a Trek series, nothing space-y has yet been shown regarding the new show, which has entirely terrestrial marketing images so far. Even our basic questions like, “Can you at least say if the show is set on a spaceship?” were dodged when we asked the producers. But Kurtzman confirms the new Star Trek will live up to its name. “Events began to unfold that conspire to take Picard back to the stars,” Kurtzman says.

    2. But that doesn’t mean Picard is returning to Starfleet. “He will [go to space],” Kurtzman adds, “but not in a way that anyone expects.” What does that mean? It sounds like Picard won’t simply get drafted back into commanding a starship — especially considering what Kurtzman reveals next.

    3. Picard seeks to fight a specific injustice, yet won’t have his usual resources. “Because he’s no longer in Starfleet, he no longer carries the weight of that behind him,” Kurtzman says. “In some ways, it’s easier to be [a great man] when you’re a captain. But it’s an entirely different thing when you don’t have an army behind you. When you want to get something done and fight an injustice, how do you do that when you’re really only one man?”

    4. His quest will be a serialized story in the first season, unlike the episodic The Next Generation. “Which isn’t necessarily new for Star Trek,” Chabon said, noting that Discovery is often serialized too, “but that is new for Picard.”

    5. Picard is “haunted” and older but fundamentally remains the same character. “There are many things that haunt Picard,” Kurtzman teases, adding the ill-fated Romulus mission is just one of those things. And Chabon notes the series will incorporate that the character is a different age. “He’s a lot older and we’re not shying away from that at all — we’re dealing with a man who’s in a very different place in his life,” Chabon says. Yet at the same time, Picard will still be the man you know and love. “It was terribly important to us that he remains fundamentally Picard,” Kurtzman says. “You will not see a version that betrays the man we loved from Next Generation. We’re not doing that. But we wanted to put a character with that level of morality and leadership and who always does the right thing no matter how hard the circumstances … we wanted to put that to the test.”

    6. Other Next Generation actor appearances are not being ruled out. The producers just want to make sure they’re not, you know, cheesy. “What we don’t want to do is just throw in cameos,” Kurtzman says. “There would have to be an incredibly specific story reason [for them to be there].” Former Next Gen star Jonathan Frakes was previously announced as directing two episodes in the first season, but there’s no word if he appears on camera. The show’s new regular cast members (Alison Pill, Michelle Hurd, Evan Evagora, Isa Briones, Santiago Cabrera, and Harry Treadaway) are not playing any familiar Next Gen characters, Kurtzman confirms.

    7. Stewart as Picard is better than you’ve ever seen him. “The quality of Patrick’s acting, if anything, has gotten even better over time and he was already a master,” Chabon says. “He has an ability to hold you riveted even when he’s just sitting and listening.” Naturally. Picard is always at his best when he looks … engaged.

There's a Picard-centric exhibit at SDCC this weekend - costumes, medals, a thing that's sort of like a real-world museum exhibit dedicated to a famous person's life and exploits. And....a few more details about the show have been revealed in it!

      https://trekmovie.com/2019/07/18/the...icard-details/

The entrance of the exhibit features a portrait of Picard along with a placard off to the side providing the in-universe description of the event, which also ends up detailing some details about Picard’s life after Star Trek: Nemesis and before Star Trek: Picard.
One of Starfleet’s most decorated officers, Admiral Jean-Luc-Picard retired from Starfleet in 2386 after more than 50 years of service, returning to a quiet life tending to his family’s storied winemaking tradition in the Chateau Picard vineyards of La Barre, France.

Many of Picard’s personal mementos and rare artifacts from his life and career are stored in the Starfleet Museum Quantum Archives located at Starfleet Command headquarters in San Francisco.

For the first time, many of these artifacts are now available for view in a special touring exhibition celebrating his career of service and lifetime of dedication to the principles of Starfleet and the United Federation of Planets.
The year 2386 is significant as it is the year before the Hobus Supernova which destroyed Romulus as depicted in the 2009 Star Trek movie, an event which has been said to have “haunted” Picard leading into the new series.
The exhibit features a handful of elements from the upcoming Picard series, with the highlight being his civilian outfit featured in the previously released teaser images. Notably, the placard describes it is as “Jean-Luc Picard Civilian Attire, 2399,” confirming Star Trek: Picard is set in the year 2399 — twenty years after Star Trek: Nemesis.

The placard offers a few more details on Picard’s post-Starfleet life:
Admiral Picard’s retirement has been marked by a return to his native La Barre France on Earth. Admiral Picard has put the same dedication and resolve that exemplified his Starfleet career into the family wine-making business. The clothing seen here is representative of the attire Amiral Picard wears on a typical day on the family estate as he tends to the vines and crafting of Chateau Picard’s celebrated wines.
There were also more artifacts from Picard’s vineyard including a case of wine with the following description:
A mainstay of the French countryside for centuries, the Picard family vineyards near La Barre continue to produce Chateau Picard, one of Earth’s premiere red wines. Far from home, Admiral Picard still received shipments of the wine and shared it with friends on special occasions both joyful and solemn. Though he initially eschewed “the family business” in favor of a career in Starfleet, Admiral Picard returned to his home in 2386 to take over the care of the vineyards, carrying on the tradition previously observed by his late elder brother, Robert.
And the placard for a model of the USS Enterprise-E also added another data point to Picard’s post-Nemesis life, identifying the year he was promoted and left the ship. It also mentions a mysterious assignment. The placard reads in part:
Admiral Picard commanded the Enterprise-E until 2381, before he was promoted to admiral and given a special assignment by Starfleet Command.
There's a whole bunch of photos at the link of the various props and costumes, too.

Would I be correct in assuming this about Star Trek: Picard:

It takes place sometime after Star Trek: Nemesis meaning all that happened in the other series, DS9, Voyager, Enterprise and TOS still happens.

The only thing that was taken from the J.J. Abrams timeline was the destruction of Romulus to basically say: this is what happens in the Roddenberry era/Prime timeline when that happened.

Correct. Though the destruction of Romulus didn't happen in the Kelvin timeline, that was just Spock Prime, while in the Kelvin timeline, recalling it happening back in 2387 in the Prime timeline as the event that brought him there.

The Prime timeline we all grew up with still exists:
                          • 2151-55 - Enterprise
                          • 2254 - TOS pilot The Cage
                          • 2257-58 - Discovery Season 1-2
                          • 2265-69 - TOS
                          • c. 2270-2293 - TMP/TWOK/TSFS/TVH/TFF/TUC/Generations intro
                          • 2364-78 - TNG/Generations/First Contact/Insurrection, DS9, VOY
                          • 2379 - Nemesis
                          • (somewhere around here) - upcoming show Lower Decks
                          • 2386 - Picard retires from Starfleet (according to the Picard exhibit at SDCC right now)
                          • 2387 - Romulus destroyed (Spock Prime's flashback in the 2009 film)
                          • 2399 - Picard (according to the Picard exhibit at SDCC right now)

The three Chris Pine/Zachary Quinto films are the only things set in the alternate timeline.

The only thing that was taken from the J.J. Abrams timeline was the destruction of Romulus to basically say: this is what happens in the Roddenberry era/Prime timeline when that happened.

...You know I don’t think I ever realised. Thanks...

So for the record that sign would put their last assimilation in 2383.
