If I can point out some silver lining: a change in the person running the show/series isn't necessarily a bad thing, particularly in context of Star Trek.

In the world of the TOS films, after TMP had a somewhat cool reception, Paramount made sure that Gene Roddenberry had limited to no creative control over the second film. And as a result, we got Wrath of Khan--widely regarded as one of the best of all of the Trek films to this day.

With the decline of Roddenberry's health during the run of TNG, he stepped away from running the show and control was handed over to other people. That was when the show was heading into its third season, and is generally seen as the period in which TNG stepped up its game and became one of the greats, after the not-insignificant number of embarrassing episodes in the show's first two seasons.

Enterprise is another great example. When Manny Coto started to step up during Season 3, the show turned from a trainwreck into something halfway respectable. By the time he was running the show in Season 4, it had actually managed to become good.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Let's just wait and see how this turns out.

      Discovery casts three Klingons:

Chris Obi (Anubis in American Gods) as T’Kuvma, a leader seeking to unite the Klingon houses

Shazad Latif (Jekyll in Penny Dreadful) as Kol, a Klingon Commanding Officer and protege of T’Kuvma

Mary Chieffo as L’Rell, the Battle Deck Commander of a Klingon ship

        And the big one...

Star Trek: Discovery casts Sonequa Martin-Green, best known as Sasha in The Walking Dead, as lead actress. Seems she will be playing the as-yet unnamed Lt Cmdr main character.

Wonder how much more casting they got to do, That may deadline is looking tight as well now.
An with casting coming so late in the year, they clearly lied to the fans the delays was due to a upgrade in CGI.

            Just announced:

James Frain (The Tudors, True Blood, Gotham) will be playing Sarek on the show.

Ooh and they tried to fly this one under the radar a bit...Seems that, while the show begins filming in Toronto next week, they are no longer committing to a May premiere--so looks like it's been delayed again

At least, we have actors... and a filming schedule (of sorts).

Like they have said. "It is more important to do it right then to do it fast." So they can take there time IMO. As long as we get updates on what is happening and it is still progressing towards Star Trek: Discovery actually going to show. Not like with the Stargate reboot movies.

That, at least, I think is a safe assumption.

Emmerich/Devlin have been full of it re: Stargate continuation/reboot for many years now, just making things up (with no substance) to rile up the fans. Discovery, contrarily, has actors, sets, and apparently starts filming next week.

Devlin's too busy with other projects.

Is it normal for shows to that though? Constant delays?

It doesn't happen all the time, but it's not unheard-of either. Off the top of my head:

Stargate Atlantis was originally supposed to spin off from SG-1 after season 6, which was when SG-1 was going to end. Instead SG-1 was renewed for one 'last' season with possibly a movie to wrap it up, and Atlantis would replace it then. Instead SG-1 was renewed again, the movie was reworked into Lost City, and Atlantis launched alongside SG-1 season 8.

Production of Westworld took ages and at one point was halted entirely during the making of season 1--even though at that point, HBO had already released a teaser for the series.

Star Wars Detours went into production in 2009, was officially announced in 2010, apparently has 39 completed episodes, and has yet to air at all.

Atlanta received plenty of accolades and awards/nominations for its debut season, but now its second has been delayed until further notice because one of its actors will be taking time off to film the Han Solo movie.

I think it's normal for any project which is that large in scale. There's always something delaying or not in order.
Though, the problem of course then becomes the issue with interest diminishing so the more delays happen, the harder it gets to get things off the ground.

I guess its a lot more in your face because of the increased role the internet plays these days. Ten to fifteen years ago, we'd probably just be finding out about the show. And by we I mean the wider "fandom" not the general population/casual fans.
