That's one of the few Star Trek games that I never bought. I've looked at reviews for it since then but didn't get it because it seems a little outdated now and i'm not sure I'd enjoy it. Star Trek Armada II and Bridge Commander are both brilliant games. I can't wait until Star Trek: Legacy comes in a month or two... that looks like a brilliant game!

It came out in 2002 i think so it aint that old, if your a DS9 fan then it's worth having in your collection and the game isn't too bad.
For all the pollution woes on Earth, will the Human race end up taking those problems into space in the future?

        Defiant Class
The Defiant-class starship, officially classified as an escort, began development in 2366 as a small, highly-powered, heavily-armed warship intended to defend the Federation against the Borg. The USS Defiant (NX-74205) was the first of what was to be a new Federation battle fleet being prepared to counter the Borg. Starfleet abandoned the project when the Borg threat became less urgent and design flaws turned up nearly destroying the Defiant during its initial shakedown cruise.

The Defiant prototype was pulled out of storage in 2371 when the Dominion threat emerged. After several upgrades by Operations Chief Miles O'Brien, the ship was deemed worthy of use and several more ships of the class were constructed. (DS9: "The Search, Part I")

        History
The Defiant-class starship was a heavily armed, limited-role Starfleet vessel, developed in response to the Borg threat as originally encountered in 2365, and spurred on by the shocking results of the Battle of Wolf 359 in 2367. With the knowledge that existing weaponry and defenses would be inadequate to meet this threat, it was recognized that a new type of starship was needed to meet the tactical requirements of facing this superior enemy. Shortly after the massacre at Wolf 359 in 2367, Lieutenant Commander Benjamin Sisko joined the development team at the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards. (DS9: "The Search, Part I")

        Design and construction history
The USS Defiant (NX-74205) was the class' prototype. It was Starfleet's first dedicated combat vessel, and therefore did not house provision for families or diplomatic missions, nor science labs or recreational facilities.

The USS Defiant departs Deep Space 9.The Defiant class was a heavily armored, stripped-down starship and incorporated the latest in Starfleet weaponry and defensive technology. The Defiant class was equipped with a class-7 warp drive. The Defiant was considerably smaller than most other Federation starships.(DS9: "The Search, Part I")

        Early service years
Two Defiants and an Akira class battle the Romulans.Starfleet eventually decided to put the Defiant-class into full production. By the end of 2373, there were a significant number of Defiant-class ships in operation, and over the next two years they played a vital role in the Dominion War. (DS9 Season 7; VOY: "Message in a Bottle")

        Dominion War
The USS Defiant was destroyed by a Breen warship in 2375, during the Second Battle of Chin'toka. Another Defiant-class ship, the USS São Paulo, was assigned to Deep Space 9. Given the USS Defiant's exceptional record under Captain Benjamin Sisko's command, the Chief of Starfleet Operations gave a special dispensation to change the ship's name to Defiant. On this ship, the shield generators were completely reconfigured so that it would not be affected by the Breen's energy-dampening weapon. This new Defiant played a distinguished role in the final battle with the Dominion at Cardassia Prime, and remained stationed at Deep Space 9. Let us not forget a nice beauty shot of the ship:

Got it from http://www.thelightworks.com/deutsch/news/main_news.htm - they have some very nice artistic renderings. I've had their Enterprise-E image as my desktop background for a good few months. Just changed it to the Defiant, lol.

            Awesome shot Carl....

We just discussed the season VI episode One Little Ship which of course is the episode where a run-a-bout with Jadzia, Miles and Julian were shrank. Those scenes of the shrunken shuttle flying around on the outside of a now huge Defiant trying to find a way in were the best shots of the Defiant I have ever seen.

Thanx brother Fifth, reading this reminded that the original USS Defiant was destroyed by the Breen and when Admiral Ross gave Sisko a brand new Defiant class ship (USS Sao Paulo) he decided to rename it the USS Defiant.

Then of course there was the Defiant class ship Jake and Nog got stranded on called the USS Valiant (NCC-74210), which shouldn't be confused with the late 23rd century starship USS Valiant (NCC-1223) or the early 24rth century Oberth-class USS Valiant (NCC-200000) or the late 23rd century Federation starship USS Valiant (NCC-75418) which replaced the Defiant-class USS Valiant that Jake and Nog were saved from when it was destroyed.

If I remember right, the Defiant class USS Valiant that was destroyed and that Jake and Nog got stuck on also had a cloaking device like the USS Defiant did?. I know the one that USS Defiant had was given to us by the Romulans under the condition that we share all information and data recovered or gathered by the USS Defiant. My question is, were all the Defiant class ships that came after also equipped with cloaking devices?.

I actually do not remember if the USS Valiant also had a cloaking device, but I am a little fuzzy about that episode at the moment. I remember it had problems with its warp drive, that's why it was only able to reach warp 5 after being damaged in battle. Maybe this helps......

                  USS Defiant (NX-74205)
The class pathfinder built at the Antares Fleet Yards. The Defiant is assigned to space station Deep Space Nine in 2371 to help protect the Alpha Quadrant from the growing threat from the Dominion. The Romulan Star Empire equipped the ship with a cloaking device for use on intelligence-gathering missions in the Gamma Quadrant. In addition to engaging the Dominion's Jem'Hadar, the Defiant also sees action against Breen, Cardassian and Klingon vessels. The ship is severely damaged while fighting the Borg at the Battle of Sector 001 in 2373 and is destroyed in the 2375 invasion of the Chin'toka system during the Dominion War.
The Defiant retains "NX" in its registry even after the class enters mainstream production. This may be due to the continued presence of the Romulan cloaking device, a feature not shared with the Defiant sister ships.

Interesting about how the NX was used in the registry #. This says that no other Defiant class ships had the Romulan cloaking device. But, the Defiant class USS Valiant was a top secret ship that Sisko and friends had no idea it existed. Maybe it had the prototype Starfleet cloaking device?.

Check this out guys, I never knew this existed......

Yeah, i saw that in the DS9 Tech manual at a mate's house once... I thought the "Assimilate This!..." is a little cheesy though. Still it explains where it came from in FC.

Aye. I thought it was too much of a "Hollywood action movie" line personally.

Question: Are we going to continue with the episode discussions Fifth? "Change of Heart" is next.

Trust me I do as well my friend!. As a matter of fact, in the earlier seasons, I skipped over way to many episodes by only picking a handful of episodes to discuss from each of the first 3 seasons. It wasn't till the 4rth season that we started doing all the episodes. So when we finish with series, I want to go back and do the first 3 seasons episode by episode.

I have been working my azz off the last week, I finally can take 2 days off starting tomorrow so I am gladly watching "Change of Heart" tonight with notepad in hand.

I watched "Duet" from season 1 the other night [along with all other eps on the DVD] and must say it is the most emotionally demanding episode I have ever seen. Although I didn't this time, I cried the last time I saw the last few minutes of the ep. Such a brilliantly well-conceived episode. Look forward to discussing it when it comes around.
