I don't know about most shows. I can think of plenty (scifi or other) that were great to begin with but get progessively worse. Andromeda for example. It is however the case with Star Trek. The first few seasoms aren't usually that good but the latter ones are. Although I quite like S2 of Voyager

Hubby and I recently rewatched "the Visitor" and enjoyed it thoroughly...I consider it one of the best father-son eps of the series. (DS9 did those very well). I also caught Tony Todd as the adult jake...he played the Sodan leader Haikon in sg1's babylon (s9, ep 8) excellent turn by him as well. I must admit to loving the man's voice...so rich yet soothing.
