I think you're absolutely right. She's putting up a brave front, but she's probably used to do it. Somehow I see her doing it for a long time. She keeps all of her emotions to her; she barely trusts anyone new. The fewer for her, the better. She has lost many people she cared about over the years and it made her 'strong', but their is such a thing as being too strong for your own good. I think she would benefit from letting go more, but at last, she doesn't do it very often.

This is such an important part of who she is, and I think that is why "Requiem" is on of my favorite episodes. She finally lets her guard down a little and tells Will something that she probably hasn't told anyone. But then of course, she goes back to her usual guarded self -

Will: "You invite questions, and then when you don't like where they lead, you just walk away."
Helen: "That's hardly fair. "
And I love Will's response: "You just called me "Dr. Zimmerman" And left the room."

i reckon she buries alot and over the years has learnt to hide her feelings and put on a brave face... there may also be a bit of the whole cops who make jokes to get them through, she has hardened herself to an extent to something that although hard she deals with a lot more then she would like... she opens up on occassions to a select few and her inner circle is for the most part people who have been in her life a long time... there is not a lot of new people getting that close... its part of the interesting enigma that is helen magnus and i like seeing those little glimpses into who she is when she lets her guard down every now and then...
