the way it works is for a certain amount of reviews per chapter I will update They have to be SIGNED reviews though, because otherwise my RP brother and sister would just post the needed amount of reviews anonymously. to get to the next chapter. This is rated T for some language but mostly because Tesla is naked in a few chapters. Nothing explicit though. Don't worry Ill give warning.

This may just be me, but as a fic reader and writer both, this whole "give me reviews or I won't post" gig is in poor form. My writer spirit cries out in protest, because half the point of writing is to just get the ideas out there. People reading is a bonus-- people *reviewing* is bigger bonus.

And why alienate the reader base you do have by threatening to withhold updates from them? Many readers refuse to read Works In Progress for the precise reason that they don't want to get invested in something that an author can't finish. If they know that you won't even post what you do have in a timely manner, they'll straight up refuse until they eventually see that little "complete" sign at the bottom of the summary.

I understand that reviews can feed the muse. They do for me. And it's discouraging to invest your time writing something if you think people aren't reading. But in my experience it's been of more benefit to simply say as much in a quick author's note at the top of one of your chapters, instead of holding future chapters ransom. In the instances I've mentioned my discouragement or frustration, I've had my review inbox flooded with words of support and ideas from the readers who have followed along since the beginning-- even the ones who haven't ever reviewed before.

This turned into more of a sermon than I intended it to be, but my point stands: please don't ransom your updates. See what kind of response you get, and then interact with your readers. Post in the Fanfic Writer's Virtual Water Cooler if you need a pick-me-up. Write because you love to do it; every review should be a gift-- not an expectation.

P.S. I didn't mean for this to sound like a criticism. It's just the quickest way I've seen authors shooting themselves in the foot when starting a story. Going in with predetermined goal of reviews is a sure way to set yourself up for disappointment.

You don't need to apologize for giving me your views. I can see you are in all honest sincerity trying to help me, and I appreciate that.

I actually set this up as more of a challenge to PACE myself. Normally when I write something, I throw it all up as fast as I can. It seemed like a fun project. In addition I wanted to give the readers a chance to kind of "interact" with the story. And I wanted to incorporate Supply and Demand. I suppose i should have explained that better. It was Never purely about getting reviews.

Thanks for your input. I really do appreciate it.

I'm with Selene0789 on this. I don't even bother reading a story if the author is keeping chapters hostage for a specific number of reviews.
                        Unmade Plans (WIP: 11/20):
Sam's life takes a turn in an unexpected direction when she's faced with an unplanned pregnancy. The decision to keep the baby and raise it on her own will alter her life forever. Relationships are put to the test, especially the one between her and Jack. She doesn't know what to expect from him and he surprises her at every turn.

Pacing *is* an important issue-- but again, not one I would rectify by having a goal review count.

A trick I use is to set myself a day each week where I must post. I may post more often if the muse demands it, or if I leave it on a cliffie, but that single day each week I post. That way I have time to maintain a buffer of new material--so when I hit that writer's block six chapters ahead, I can still keep posting regularly.

I also get the readers involved with the process by letting them know that first reviewer gets to choose the day of the week I post on. I usually get a crapload of people reviewing that first chapter-- maybe because they like the story that much, maybe because they want to choose the day-- and then I get the chance to respond to each of them and establish a sort of rapport with them.

I've found the process allows me to get to know each of them better, and get them more comfortable in giving me honest feedback. If they disapprove of something, they'll be more inclined to let me know if they're already aware that I appreciate their opinions and ideas. I've used them for sounding boards when I run into a snag, and they respond really well to the structure of it.

My only goal for reviews is to respond to each one I receive-- each signed one, that is, so I can PM them. I have no way of messaging the anonymous ones. I love my readers. They know just what to say, when I need to hear it. My stories are all the better for them, and I try to let them know it as often as I can.

I don't like anonymous reviews. I wish there was some way of contacting them.

My method of updating is simple. When I finish a chapter, I post it.

The only anonymous ones I don't like are the ones that are really constructive, 'accusing' or raise a valid question simply because I would like to respond to them and I can't. Although I often work in the valid questions (or answers to them) in the next chapter (in-story) whenever possible, rather than leave an author's note to respond to all anonymous reviewers like I've seen some people do. There's a reason those people don't bother signing in and/or creating an account, after all.

I usually create an update schedule with two updates a week and extras are bonuses, simply because I'm often too excited not to share yet or want to pick up the pace a bit (I tend to start out slow to build the story's foundations).

Like selene0789 I try to get a rapport with my reviewers because in my experience it makes them more likely to react honestly to something you've written, rather than just "oh great chapter, more please!" (although those happen on occasion as well and I appreciate them too). A lot of my reviewers also come up with theories as what's coming next or mention something they would like to see, like: ooh, I can just imagine a little short scene where Hammond drops by to reassure Sam and let her know he sympathizes with her situation. And yeah, that one got worked into the story because it sparked my imagination like a lot of other honest comments reviewers give.

Another thing I've noticed is that the reviewers you get along with (via reviews and PMing back and forth) tend to follow your future stories as well, or at least check them out to see if they like them. I also have a reader who really enjoys my silly holiday ficlets, for example, and feeds it by sharing even more holidays or just PMing me to ask me if I was planning to write one for this and that day. That's how I wrote one for Talk Like A Pirate Day, although it was a bit short notice as he mentioned it on that very day and with the different time zones...
