Most people I know have only ever been to Canada (probably because we're so close to the border - can be to Canada in 20 minutes). A few have been to Mexico. I don't even know many people who have been to Hawaii or Alaska. Those are real expensive trips as well. A lot of people here travel to another state or "up north" for vacation.
I guess that depends where you are and where you are going. I flew out of Philadelphia from Shore Leave and they told me that if I had been going through Toronto it would have been an international flight (I had to pay for luggage because of the Chicago extension) but when I flew to Vancouver from San Francisco last year it was considered domestic.

Hey y'all I made this little Amanda YT vid yesterday, it's actually the shortest vid I've ever made, it's 20 seconds, it's not one of my usual Amanda vids, this one is actually a vid to show just what happens when you don't like Amanda. Be sure to reads it's description- What happens when you don't like Amanda Tapping!

I guess I should thank Family Guy for the clip .

I made a wish list when I was 12 and one wish was to visit all 50 states before I turned 50. I've made it to 36 so far, and still have lots of time for the rest.

so many people i know want to travel because they are curious, they want to experience other cultures, they want to see how other people live... they want to be able to say i have been to X,Y&Z or simply see something for real not just in a picture... we know its costly and time consuming to get there but it just means we save our money and holidays...
That's exactly why I love to travel, pure curiosity. I've been able to 'go' to so many places in literature and film, but it's one thing to see a picture of the Taj Mahal, and another entirely to stand in front of it at sunset. And I am longing for a chance to visit Australia, and New Zealand as well, but that's mainly because of LOTR.

Interesting discussion about travel. I've been in all but 2 states (haven't made it to Alaska yet and drove North & South of Nebraska, never through it), 5 Canadian Provinces and 13 European Countries, most multiple times. What can I say, I like to travel Helps that I speak French and understand a little Italian. I took French from 2nd -12th Grade plus a few courses in college, had 2 years of High School Latin and my mother spoke Italian with her older relatives so I heard a little growing up.

As for Geography, we had to be able to fill in all the states' names, major rivers and the Great Lakes on a map of the US, and know the State Capitals and Nick Names, in 4th grade and maps were always an integral part of our US and World History classes.

Wow they were tough on you. I never had to learn the Nick Names and I don't recall memorizing major rivers.

15 states and Ontario. Oddly, I've never been to any of the "big" draws. Haven't been to Florida, NY, DC, California or Vegas.

Melbourne sounds a lot like Michigan. When the jet streams shift and we go from getting the warm air up from the gulf to the cold air coming down from Canada, the weather can change quite drastically.

Exactly why I love to travel. Pictures never do anything justice. And learning about other cultures on TV is just an abstract view of the world. You have to experience it to really appreciate it. Though so far I've not been anywhere that was a real culture shock.

You're quite well traveled. I'm jealous.

I used to know the capitals. I know it's all in my brain somewhere. Know some of the nick names. Definitely know the Great Lakes and some of the major rivers.

World geography I've picked up reading the world almanac (love to look stuff up while watching the olympic parade) and watching Jeopardy. And of course the National Geographic and Travel channels.

Yeah, I've been to the strip 3 times and that was more than enough for me. It gets to the point where you've seen one casino, you've seen them all.

Wow, 48 states! Very cool. Alaska is probably going to be the trickest one for me to get to, and I've gotten within 20ish miles of Iowa, Nebraska and Montana, and a few others.

Speaking of languages, I wonder how many Helen can speak? We heard her speak some Italian in The Five, and this season they'll be going to Japan and India, so I'm hoping we'll get to see her speak some Japanese and Hindi.

Yeah, it was the same for me in school, we had to learn all the states, capitals, major rivers, etc. And since I was in Texas, we also learned detailed history of the state, where all the Indian tribes were, etc.

I've driven through lots of states and lived in a handful of them, but the only ones I've visited as a destination were New York and West Virginia. Both my parents grew up in New York and most of my extended family still lives there, and my sister lives in West Virginia. I was born in California but moved to the east coast a few months later. I've lived in four other states, I think. I don't remember because we moved something like ten times by the time I was ten, so I may be forgetting something. I like traveling at times, but I'm mostly a homebody.

I can't wait for SE though.

I think the San Francisco flight was before the new laws. I really hate going through security. I get thoroughly searched everytime I travel.

I don't think I've travelled quite as much as some of you have but it is something I love to do. I've been to most of the Canadian provinces, lived in two of them. Been to 8 States and 18 countries-Europe, Scandanavia, Russia, Japan. There are so many more places I want to go to. I have a love of history and culture and that's what draws me to the places I go to.

Yes, the history is definitely a draw. Here in North America, there is history, but most of it is from the 1700's or 1800's. And there's not much of that left. People here are too willing to tear down historic buildings to put up something new. It's really sad. And there really aren't too many Native American sites to visit, as most tribes had rather temporary housing. I just loved walking around England/Scotland and seeing things like Edinburgh Castle or the Roman Wall in London knowing that they've stood there for around a thousand years. I would love to visit Greece, Italy, Egypt and China just because of the history of those civilazations. Buildings dating back 3000 years or more!
