Interesting theory about Scaroth.

I've finally managed to get here to write my opinion. I loved the new titles and music. Strax was so funny, particularly his antics with the memory worm and him thinking grenades are the solution to everything. I thought Richard E Grant and Sir Ian McKellen were great as the villains. Pity the majority of Second Doctor episodes with the Great Intelligence are no longer extant.

I'm really happy with the new TARDIS. My favourite part was when the Doctor and Clara are tracked from outside, walk through the doors and into the TARDIS interior all seemingly in one long shot. I also loved the 360 degree look round the TARDIS interior. Nice camera work.

As for Clara, I have my own theory about her.

I think she is an avatar created by CAL and/or River in the Library. Perhaps she is an amalgam of the two.

She seems to have a "mission" each time we have seen her. I think her first mission was to remove the Doctor from the Dalek database, her second mission being to drag the Doctor out of retirement and back to saving the universe once again. All very River-like ideas.

I suspect that in the Library River can't quite remember who or what she is (like Donna and Lee while they were in the Library) but is attempting to escape. Perhaps if the body of avatar "fails", ie being turned into a Dalek etc, then the conscious part returns to the Library and another avatar is sent out instead to complete the next part of the "mission".

Unfortunately if I do turn out to be right I do worry that Alex Kingston will no longer be River.

omg! i had a similar theory today when i caught the tail end of Forest of the Dead on BBC America! [( they're doing a DW marathon to bring in the new year )] esp, at the end when Charlotte says "I'm a very clever girl," it really made me think that maybe she's an avatar of Oswin that didn't get chance to reach maturity... and Moffat wrote SitL/FotD and my head's been running circles since i came to that realization

I almost got into a heavy debate in real life about watching this eppy as a stand-alone, that it was okay, but it really helped enhance the eppy by seeing the previous Dalek eppy with Amy and Rory, and Oswin. I think seeing the previous one, helped make this one that much more special, especially when the Doctor realized who Clara was and gave her his TARDIS key.

Here's the best explanation for Clara imo.
Mod insert : Spoilers on Spec through S7 under the tags.

Spoiler:

Clara is a manifestation of the TV show itself.

1. In Asylum, her last name is Oswald. The other guy we meet from the Alaska, his name is Harvey. Lee harvey Oswald killed JFK on November 22nd, 1963, the same day the first episode of Doctor Who was set to air.

2. Clara was born on November 23rd per her gravestone. She dies at age 26. The original series ran for 26 years.

3. Clara has died twice and been brought back a third time now, or at least will be when the next episode airs. The TV show has been cancelled twice. Once in 1989, and again after the failed 1996 pilot in America. The show was brought back for a third run.

4. Clara breaks the 4th wall in Asylum and speaks directly to the camera, something no other character has ever done in the new series. Again, implying she is beyond a character in the TV show itself.

One other thing about Clara.

Spoiler:

Oswin Oswald. Initials are O.O. The second manifestation, her name became Clara Oswin Oswald. Initials are C.O.O. I'm willing to bet that in her third manifestation, he is Clara Oswin Oswald L*****, so her initials are C.O.O.L. Why? Because Doctor Who is cool!

This may mean that the 50th anniversary special will focus on the Doctor breaking through into "our" universe, so to speak, where Doctor Who is just a TV Series. The Doctor meets actors Matt Smith, David Tennant, Chris Eccelston, and all the others who played the character. He meets with the actors and actresses who played companions, producers, etc. I would have to think a crossover is in store if we're breaking the 4th wall here.

I thought it was an awesome episode! Much better than last year's. But what's with Clara/Oswin? Can she not die, and just jumps to a different time at her apparent "death"?

So there seem to be versions of her spread out across time..

i've never seen Blackadder... but that has more to do with my nationality than my age.... it's on my "to watch" list
