I believe that the Final Five were actually the First Five skin models created.

Kobol is what connects everything together.
My theory:
Everything started on Kobol. It was a civilization of 13 tribes who were brilliant astronomers and technologically well advanced. They knew about Earth and the Twelve Colonies because of astronomy. It is no accident that twelve ships set out from Kobol and came upon 12 habitable planets. How rare is that? In our Solar System Earth is the only planet than can sustain human life. They went to the 12 colonies on purpose because they knew they were there. This is how Colonials knew about Earth. And that is how the arrow of Apollo came to rest in Caprica.

Meanwhile the thirteenth tribe - which were all cylons of another model -- went to Earth because they knew it was there. Beats me how Earth got nuked, but I'm working on it.
