The film opens with a speech, outlining in simple form Marx's theory that human civilization began in outer space. Originally this speech was written by Captain Apollo, but when Apollo was exiled from Russia during the Starbuckist Purges the speech was replaced.
There follows a sweeping orchestral theme. Since it is a silent movie, this consists of footage of sheet music, with a hand slowly turning the pages.
Then, we learn of the harsh life of the sailors aboard the Potemkin. They are forced to scrub the surface of the Battlestar, and thereby die in the cold depths of space; Count Baltar flogs them at the least provocation and they are sometimes arbitrarily made to change their gender and/or race.
The crew mutinies, and Baltar flees to Moscow, where he meets the Cylon Imperious Czar, who sends a force of Cylon warriors to Caprica (now known as Odessa) to shoot the crap out of some people and generally spread bad vibes. This leads to Caprica Steps Massacre scene, one of the best known and most imitated scenes in film history. The people of Caprica are seen dancing and singing and generally having a lovely time, when the Cylons march down the steps, shooting as they go. The Cylons are depicted as moving with horrifying deliberation and precision, almost as if they were machines. Many people are killed or injured, including a young boy's dog, which must be replaced by a robot dog. The Cylons then destroy the Battlestar Potemkin, and the rebellion is crushed.

Fox OKs Moore's Virtuality

Fox has given the green light to Virtuality, a two-hour backdoor SF pilot from the mastermind behind SCI FI Channel's Battlestar Galactica, Ronald D. Moore, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The project, from Universal Media Studios and producers Gail Berman and Lloyd Braun, is set aboard the starship Phaeton on a 10-year journey to explore a distant solar system. To help the 12 crew members endure the long trip and keep their minds occupied, NASA has equipped the ship with advanced virtual-reality modules, allowing them to assume adventurous identities and go to any place they want. The plan works until a mysterious bug is found in the system, the trade paper reported.

Virtuality is a brainchild of Braun, who shaped the idea with Berman, his producing partner at BermanBraun.

The two approached several writers, including Moore, who sparked to the premise and quickly developed it into what became the concept for Virtuality. He brought with him Battlestar writer-producer Michael Taylor. The two penned the script and are executive-producing the project with Berman and Braun.

Galactica's Future as 'Allegory for the American Revolution'

NEW YORK -- Where will Battlestar Galactica fans get their heavy dose of revolutionary sci-fi after the show ends? In Caprica, if Mark Stern has his way. The BSG prequel (the pilot's in the works) will follow Galactica's successful template, tackling weighty issues through science fiction's speculative lens, according to Stern, executive vice president of original programming for Sci Fi Channel
