I gained a great deal of respect for JMS back when B5 was airing. He would pop into the major newsgroup at the time and answer all sorts of fan questions. And didn't he have the entire series written before they even started filming? That's extremely impressive.
You know, I've been wondering something about Straczynski ever since I first watched the pilot episode. Did he make one of his main B5 characters Russian (Ivanova) because he is or might be Russian? Does anyone know the answer to this question? I'm curious, because it's interesting for a writer to choose a different name than something like Smith or Jones for an American audience.
No, I doubt it. Straczynski sounds more Polish or possibly Czech than Russian to me. And Ivanova isn't the only non-Anglo name... Let's not forget Garibaldi who had Italian ancestry and Sheridan has Irish ancestry from way back (IIRC one of his ancestors fought in the American war of independence), so they aren't all Anglo-Americans.
However, I doubt that has anything to do with JMS roots, rather common sense. I would have liked to see a few more Asian faces on the show (on today's Earth about 5 out of 7 people is Asian), but other than that I think they managed to be rather diverse considering the intended audience.
That's one of the best things about the show. I like the diversity. It's more real. I go to an Engineering school and there's probably a good portion of everyone from all over the world. There is no majority in regards to ethnicity. I guess in Science, it doesn't matter where you came from, you just have to be able to do the job. JMS did it right on the show.

The big news for me is that he is not currently moving forward with the B5 reboot movie because he can only personally raise about sixty million dollars. He says he needs more time and a little more success to reach his one hundred million dollar goal. I assume this means either WB isn't interested or he wants to get to his goal before going to them.
Other big news is that he has been dealing with some big health issues and he feels he needs to pull back on his work load a bit, so he is stepping away from comics. This is pretty big news considering what he supposedly had coming down the pipeline, but it does explain some of the issues he's had over the past couple of years with his StudiosJMS releases.
So off the top of my head here is what it sounds like he has in the works.
Rising Stars Feature Film for MGM with franchise possibilities.
It a shame he doesn't own the rights to produce material for tv, I bet netflix would fund a babylon 5 remake or what ever else he wanted to do in the universe.

I bet you are right. I am sure there are plenty of people who would put money into a episodic revival if Warner Brothers was not so attached to maintaining control of it. So we'll just have to hope JMS can eventually get a movie done.
