Anja: biscuits as in a small, crisp, sweet treat is not unknown by Americans, however, it is NOT the first thing that comes to mind when someone says that word. Just as petrol is not unknown, it is not used here when referring to automotive fuel. We say gasoline. A contraption that takes you from floor to floor in a multi-story building is an elevator, not a lift. A multiple-home building where many people live separately is an apartment rather than a flat or maison.
