    You could still just prick a finger or thumb, like people who have to test their blood sugar. Smaller cut, heals faster, hurts less.

                  My guess is that they palm a small bag of fake blood and slice it with a knife. Slightly cover the cut (the empty bag) so it's never shown and the blood sells it.
