Gotta go with the rabid squirrel on this one. You can call it instinct, say I'm anthropomorphizing, or whatever you want, but if a critter prepares for forthcoming young, or an incoming storm, or whatever, it's planning. This is visible in many species.

Even Squirrels, with their 3 brain cells, store up nuts ahead of time.
