True but if there was a compelling show on I'd watch it.

For the same reason I use a spoon to cut out your heart, it hurts more.

What do you see as compelling besides shipping?

In my experience that is all SQ cares about

I don't just watch a show for shipping. I love a good sci fi or fantasy or drama. But I like good character stories where they take risks with main cast and let them go through good arcs and they don't do hokey character resets every week.

Everyone says that but in reality do not mean it

Of course shipping is all SQ is concerned with. She's female, isn't she? That's why they put shipping into otherwise perfectly acceptable TV shows, to attract a female audience.

What about the token evil British character

You mean all Brits aren't evil?

Just like all Americans aren't stupid. You sadly encourage that stereotype

I mean it. That was the one thing that bugged me about SG1 is they sort of went out on the edge with characters but then at the end of the day they reset them. I think that formula is encouraged and wanted by TV execs because a show that isn't so linear and not dependent to be shown in order is much easier to replay in syndication. I think serial shows end up being more problematic for TV stations to "catch people up" and get new viewers to a series because people don't typically want to or will not actually jump into a story mid stream. And so you cannot fully appreciate the characters arc because you aren't privy to what they've been through. So instead they opt for these vanilla characters and go through hell during a small arc that may be contained over a couple of eps with their famous "To Be Continued" Deal....but over all at the end of that small arc they pretty much go back to their previous character status...so the show can just carry on as usual.

I think as a more demanding audience especially in fantasy and sci fi dramas we expect characters to change and stay changed for good. It's hard sometimes when they don't change the way you wanted them too. Take BSG for example. I hated what they did with the Starbuck character at the end. But they left it. It's hurts but it really is more compelling if you tell the story the way it was meant to be told. Which means precious characters change and die and move on. That is why I love the Walking Dead, because they aren't afraid to kill off main characters and keep them gone. Not kill them off but then find some hokey way to bring them back over and over again *cough*DanielJackson*cough*

I think audiences today are demanding that to be honest. It just rings more true and makes for a much more believable story.

WOW sorry that was long winded but....meh....
