That's the beauty of a really good watch - it's worth it to have it worked on. I got mine at a pawn shop for $100. I took it to a watchmaker and got it running, bought a heavy gold band for it to replace the leather (back when gold was cheap), and now it's worth between $4-6K

and yes, you can get a new crystal if it gets scratched

hehe - back when gold was cheap (right after the Bank of England flooded the market by selling off about half their gold reserves) a girlfriend and I hit the pawn shops very regularly. I have a great deal of very good jewelry now that my daughters will inherit someday.
