Also why do politicians have this insane idea that air strikes are the only way to fight ISIS?

I would wager that some chance is better than no chance.
We can help prevent suicides, depression, and all kinds of things by the mere act of understanding the motivations and causative factors. Will we find a "template" for radicalization that will fit all, no. Will we find one that is broad enough to determine some "indicators"? I don't see why not, we have been capable of doing it for many other things.

You can't win a "war" against an "idea", you need to disprove the validity of the idea.
