It'll be much like the different Dollars - Canadian, American, Australian ... they are all dollars but not worth the same.

Would they not have to adopt the Euro upon admission?

I found an interesting article that might shed some light on the EU thing, and it also touches upon the money-thing --> Will Scotland be in the European Union?

There is one stumbling block to that if you look at the 224 page report (nah, did not read all of it )
It assumes that Scotland can use the sterling pound during the transition period and the resources of the Bank of England, something the BOE has said will not happen as P-90 pointed out.

Nope. Certain conditions need to be met to be able to join the Euro zone.

Its really not that different than the nation's that have nuclear weapons
