It always strikes me how selfish people are in the world today. Sure people pay a lot into charities (in the UK at least) and that's laudable but beyond that everyone just seems to be in it for themselves. There's no real sense of community or working for a common good any more.

Yeah, because it's that simple. Every successful economy on the planet uses a mixture of capitalistic and socialistic ideals, the US is no different. Where the US is quite different, and becoming more different, is the way in which the country is redirecting massive welfare cheques and tax breaks to massive corporations and the people that need it least, instead of giving opportunities to the people that them most. Business and the state are becoming more and more intertwined in the US, in fact they're starting to merge, which I believe we have a word for. Why? Because corporations are now people my friend, which means the US government is bought and paid for.

2ndly, I think a more accurate term for this discussion would be to "convince" that Islam is the better way (better than Christianity or Native American spiritism, etc).

Isn't that what missionaries from all religions do? Sell their religion as the best one out there.

Anyway, it'd probably be more likely that you might try to convince me that atheism or pagan/wiccan is the better way.

If referring to current 20th and 21st century (C.E.) era events, when folks deliberately re-enact being nailed to a cross--up to a few years ago, I always thought that was fake stage blood, etc. The news (media) used to be careful showing folks just having their arms wrapped up with rope around cross beams. If any blood was also displayed (for realism), it often appeared to be the usual fake stage prop stuff used. Not sure if it was fake or real, but to comprehend those folks crucifying themselves for real should also be a concern for after-effect health issues; and I don't mean simple dehydration for *pretending* to go thru the motions.

...and nothing fake about it either. Real nails, real blood, and real pain.

...and I highly doubt if any of the Christians who were slaughtered over the centuries were given any morphine or painkiller drugs just so they wouldn't feel the pain intensity of what they were going thru.

It's called torture for a reason. Or blood sports if it involved an arena with wild animals.

Torture comes in all different sizes and shapes, the more painful the better. Mankind has perfected the art, and even to this day new ways are being invented to torture other human beings -- waterboarding anyone?

Disturbing sidenote----I've heard college aged kids talking about deliberately poking themself with nails and other sharp objects to see how much they can tolerate laying on a bed of spiked nails without feeling the pain. The person who told me this was a crazy relative of mine, and when I tried to explain about the medical dangers of tetanus (resulting from rusty nails), he just changed the conversation.

Don't find it disturbing, unless you're cutting yourself up or hurting yourself on purpose, then we're talking psychological issues.

The higher your threshold for pain, the longer you can keep at it.

I think we've all been in a dare once or twice in our lives to see who can keep their hand over a burning candle the longest.

The only thing that might be wiser is actually to apply scientific method in exploring new ideas rather than having bloody revolutions and wars fought over them. You know, there was this old Soviet joke: if Communism were scientific, the Communists would've tried their ideas out on rats before moving on to human experiments.

There IS no new age, and there won't be. The only way to stop people from fighting is to turn them into phlegmatic cattle with no passions to be driven by.
