That doesn't make any sense. These people were the bishops of Rome--the titular leader of early Christendom. The office of 'bishop of Rome' and 'pope' are one and the same. Heck, "pope" is derived from the Latin "papa," meaning "father."

As a matter of fact, I would say that the reasoning of your post is completely backward: the early church chose its leaders, in spite of a third party (the Roman authorities) labeling them an illegal sect.

Christianity was not one unified entity pre-Catholic Church. The Bishop of Rome had no say in the matters of Antioch, or Constantinople or Alexandria. He was limited to Rome and any others that may have held some sort of allegiance to the church there. As SGalisa points out, Peter wasn't even the bishop of Rome, during his life time I do believe there was a council of Apostles at Jerusalem and then there's Paul who operated out of Antioch. You'd be hard pressed to prove that Peter even set foot in Room to rule over the heads of John et al. And then the first few "Popes" are questionable to begin with. I wonder if the guys in Alexandria had any say in who the second pope would be. What about those at the Kingdom of Axum?

Yes, I've noticed a lot of frivolous stuff gets discussed in there. I don't see it as a "can of worms." The US is violating its own constitution by allowing states to place restrictions on who can and can't get married and by having DoMA on the Federal level.

Oh, I agree with you. And I too don't see it as a "can of worms" but every single time this discussion comes up threads end up closed, and mods rain down like there's no tomorrow. Just sayin'... it could get ugly.

Equal rights don't apply to gay people Everyone knows that.. They're not real people, and anyway letting two men or two women get married is icky

We must protect the sanctity of marriage! And the rights of Britney Spears to get married for 55 hours.. and that Cardassian woman's 72 day marriage. Letting two people of the same gender make a lasting commitment to each other is just nonsense!

That's simply because of right wing idiocy. Fortunately for me...I prayed to St. Ignora...and she always answers my prayers to block the bile of those individuals who are a little less accepting in their thinking. And honestly, I'm surprised to find that kind of thinking in the SciFi realm.

Yeah...I had to cut some people out of my life after the last election. Unfortunately, some of the narrow minded people were family members. I didn't cut the family members out of my life...I just hid their responses on FB...so I wouldn't be tempted by them or get in an unnecessary tizzy!

I don't see it as being that important of a deal in the big term really. It will really just be an issue so the left can re-cement the majority of a few groups that already vote for them in mass (as in quanities not the state) by making look like they actually give a crap.

And if the Biblle Thumpin Right is right and it causes the Jesus Apocalypse.....well I don't see the world coming to an end as all that big of a deal either..
