So you think that just a few dollars from every paycheck from now till retirement is gonna be a sufficient nest egg eh? Let's do the math shall we? for the purposes of this argument we'll make a couple assumptions. First, We'll presume that by "few dollars oout of every paycheck" you mean $10 from every paycheck. Second, we'll presume a standard bi-weekly payment cycle. And third, we'll presume that a person is lucky enough to have a completely unbroken employment history from about 16 (when most people enter the workforce in such entry-level jobs as flipping burgers) and we'll even push the retirement age to 70.

- Setting aside $10 out of every paycheck, if on a standard bi-weekly payment cycle translates to setting aside $20 every month

- $20/month x 12 months/year = $240
- Assuming said unbroken work history from 16 until retirement at 70 = 54 years of unbroken employment, so $240 x 54 years of working = $12,960 for a retirement nest egg

$12,960 will last a person maybe 5 years at best and that's with doing a lot of scrimping, saving, and sacrificing. How will that person last through the remainder of their retirement? Or is the plan perhaps to force the elderly report for mandatory euthanasia when their nest eggs run out?

Before you mention "Social Security" I'll say here and now that I don't expect it to be around by the time I reach retirement age.

I read it, but as with most of what he said, he's off his rocker on that. Age discrimination, anyone? Oh, that can't be, the Dems are the party of inclusion, right?

In many cases, an older person can't take time to re-educate, he has to keep working, even a crap job or two in order to keep a roof over his and possibly his familiy's head and food on the table.

If he/she really wants to, they will find a way.

A friend's mother just turned 60 -- and she's studying Egyptology at university.
She's done a deskjob all her life -- time for a change she said.

My friend, by the way, is 34 and has two kids. She has 2 master degrees, Egyptology and Religion. She will graduate next year as a trauma nurse. She was a religion teacher at a catholic school. For the whole four years, they didn't have that extra income. Yet, they survived just fine. Did I mention, she has two small children -- 5 and 3 years old.

and when will people be able to afford to retire in this utopia of yours if they're gonna be too busy continually learning new skills because they keep getting displaced from jobs? or is retiring in a casket gonna be part of this new utopia?

When they have fulfilled their years of service, or in some cases when chronic illness forces them into early retirement (at which time they have the choice to retire depending on the illness, or retrain to something that fits better with their condition). Belgians have to work until they are either at the minimum 65 years old, or have 40+ service years. Your pension depends on it.

I have a savings account, and a pension plan at work.

and therein lies the rub....you let stuffed-shirt government bureaucrats in some ivory tower somewhere dictate to you how long you must work and dictate to you in general how to live your life in other ways

No, I don't see racism in everything (I can't speak for the others). However, if you look at media portrayal of those who commit violent acts...those that are any shade of brown sink seem to be classified as "terrorists" (or some other negative term) immediately. If they are Caucasian (which I am), they are classified as "challenged," "mentally unstable," or some other white-washed term to lessen what they've done.


When the Shooter Is White

There is a local case of a white teen who killed 6 people while driving drunk at age 16. It was his case that coined the term "Affluenza." He was given a slap on the wrist and probation. When a video leaked of him drinking, he fled to Mexico with his mother because his violated his probation. When he was brought back to the US, he was sentenced to jail, but now he's about to be released. If he were (for sake of argument) say Latino and not wealthy, he would've been locked up and had the key thrown away.
