    Episode 3 "Solus" Part 3 of 6

    Spoiler:

Tood slowly walked outside of the office, across the reception area, and into the main hallway. It was his chance. His electro-neuro interface alerted him of new files coming in from Girlbot. They were schematics of the palace with instructions to find out why the main reception hall is busy.

Tood decided to go around most of the direct routes to the main reception hall by heading towards the southern side of the palace. He found a hallway with a simplistic wall on his left and no wall on his right. A simple waist high decorative yet sturdy safety rail that looked like miniature buttresses was the only thing that would keep anyone from accidentally stepping off to a two hundred foot drop.

The hallway had various doors to the left every twenty feet and ended about five hundred feet away from his current position. At that point he would be able to enter into the last door and find a air vent that he could use to sneak his way down to the ground floors and move towards the reception halls. Hopefully Girlbot wouldn’t be expecting a quick job.

Tood passed one of the doors and heard it open. For that moment his body froze completely. Before he could remind himself that they knew he was there and that he was authorized to walk about. Though he was going in the wrong direction he could probably make up a simple excuse. Before he could turnaround, however, he felt the intense blow from a blunt object at the back of his head.

The blow sent Tood dashing forward, his vision began to blur, unconsciousness would soon follow. His bionic systems began to compensate by pumping extra adrenaline and activating most of his cognitive nodes to replace his failing neurological systems in an effort to keep him awake. He felt the unknown person grab his shirt, pull him back and swing him at the wall. Tood dropped himself to the floor and rolled over towards the safety rail. With his vision still blurred and his fluid reflexes, he was unable to get up before a black military type boot crushed his chest pushing all the wind out of him.

His hands reached for the leg in a green pants, he knew that it was a guard. Tood used all the strength that his shocked body could muster and pulled himself in a sitting position still holding on to the leg of the quite possibly surprised guard. The blow to his head was hard enough to drop even the toughest person, Tood’s bionics managed to keep him awake and kicking, literally kicking. As he attempted knock his attacker over by throwing his shoulder at him, or rather her, she bent over, grabbed the rail pulled herself as she jumped over the rail freeing her foot from Tood’s grasp. Tood stood up and saw the unexpected, she was gone.

“Why on earth did she jump?” Tood asked himself out loud.

Below him he saw a grappling hook with flying up towards him. He ducked out of the way, the hook attached itself to the ceiling. Within a second, she zoomed right up and landed on the rail. She spun and kicked Tood in the face sending him down to the ground. Tood recognized her and instead of getting up he just rolled on to his back and looked up.

“Lyn?” Tood spoke panting from the five second fight.

“Oh hi Tood,” Lyn responded pulling back the grappling hook into her grappling gun which looked a lot like her ray gun.

“Was any of that necessary?” Tood asked. Lyn walked up to Tood and set her foot on his chest sending his back down to the ground. She aimed her gun right at Tood’s face.

“It would have been easier if you just fell down and didn’t get up,” Lyn said.

“This is? You’re a?” Tood asked.

“A soldier for these people?” Lyn finished his question, “Honey, I am not from this world. I wouldn’t want to be. Get up.” Lyn backed up still aiming her gun at Tood.

“I don’t even like being here,” Lyn continued talking as Tood got to his feet, “I don’t think any sane person would. These people are as weird as you can get.”

“So why attack me?” Tood asked.

“I didn’t recognize you, just saw that you were a guy and, well, I needed a reason to get into some of the more restricted areas which include the holding cells,” Lyn said.

“And jumping off the building was necessary?” Tood continued asking

“It worked,” Lyn shrugged, “Here, put these on.” Lyn threw a pair of old looking handcuffs at Tood. Tood caught them and stared incredulously back at Lyn. “You’re making this harder than it should be, do it,” Lyn insisted.

“No, I have a better idea,” Tood countered, “Just take me to the main reception hall. Pretend that I am wanted there.”

“Why would you be wanted there?” Lyn asked.

“I don’t know, make something up,” Tood said. Lyn stood thinking for a moment.

“This isn’t going to work,” Lyn said, “But it’s still worth a try. Where is she, Tood?”

“Locked up, for now” Tood answered, Lyn smiled and holstered her gun. Tood fastened the hand cuffs with his hands at the front. Lyn grabbed him by the cuffs and began pulling him along. They went through one of the doors and passed two guards unquestioned. Upon entering a small lift, Lyn broke the silence they had.

“Just act all scared and wimpy like you usually do, you’ll be fine,” Lyn said.

“Thanks for the encouragement,” Tood responded. Lyn sucked her buttom lip in.

“Just act like my prisoner. I know you can do this on your own, but together we both get through security a lot easier,” Lyn said in a reassuring tone.

They managed to pass through each checkpoint with minimal problems. Very few guards questioned their authenticity. After the finally check point they finally made their way towards the reception section of the palace. Tood and Lyn had to be careful not to be spotted, the less interaction with security, the better. At this point their cover might not work as well.

      Episode 3 "Solus" Part 4 of 6

      Spoiler:

      They found their way to

“Hey look, it works,” Lyn smiled and pushed Tood into an emense room. A maze of large marble columns acted as walls and halls inside the giant reception hall. White drapes united many of the columns that reached up to another crystal domed roof.

“Can you take off the handcuffs now?” Tood asked Lyn. Lyn walked ahead of him carefully peaking around each turn and intersection on the lookout for guards. Tood reluctantly followed a feet behind her as she took out her raygun. They arrived at one last turn that would lead to a large indoor garden.

They continued towards the garden slowly and cautiously.

“This place is empty, maybe we missed them,” Tood said. Before Lyn could respond a noise caught her attention. She turned and saw something that wasn’t human. Tood turned to face what Lyn saw. The seven foot tall insectoid creature wrapped in dark blue and green armor that appeared to be made up of some sort of flexible organic compound. It’s four arms held a long pod-like device. A screeching sound emitted as a dark purple plasma burst shot out. The plasma burst struck Tood within a split second. The force of the blow sent Tood flying several feet across the garden until he crashed into a column.

“Tood!” Lyn cried out, then she dodged the creature’s fire by falling down on her knee into a roll. Once she came to a stop she turned towards the Xtzit soldier who was re-aiming his weapon. Her raygun fired at the soldier hitting him right at his triangular head piercing through the exoskeleton. Dark yellowish goo splat out slightly, the Xtzit fell to the ground trembling. Before Lyn could make it to where Tood was, another two Xtzit came up behind her.

“Tzik Xiz K-tek,” it commanded Lyn to a halt. Another Xtzit soldier appeared where Tood’s body was on the floor unconscious. Lyn had no choice but to comply, since the soldier was aiming his weapon at Tood.

The Xtzit took Lyn to a nearby meeting lounge to present her to the Prime Minister of Solus II. The lounge was lightly furnished with only three long sofas in a triangular arraignment around coffee table with a few ornamental light stands. They shoved Lyn in front of the Prime Minister who stood near one of the sofas with a large Xtzit. Tood was being dragged right behind Lyn and was simply dropped. The Prime Minister took a good look at the two, and recognized them both. She cocked an eyebrow and turned to the large Xtzit that towered over the Primeminister and the two human guards in the room.

“This is?” the large Xtzit demanded through a voice mimicker attached around his upper thorax.

“Trouble,” Prime Minister Zurik responded. She turned towards one of the two guards and said, “Contact security, tell them that Ambassador Girlbot is to be apprehended at once.” She turned back to the Xtzit commander.

“Know you them?” the Xtzit commander asked.

“The man belongs to Ambassador Girlbot, and she,” Zurik turned to face Lyn, “is a disobedient daughter of Solustia.”

“I’m not-” the Xtzit soldier rammed his weapon into Lyn’s back sending her to the ground on her knees and hands.

“What are you doing here?” Zurik demanded to know, “After all of these years you finally come back to us and to do what? Spy on us?”

Lyn slowly stood back up and said nothing much to Zurik’s disliking. Lyn just simply smiled at her and turned to face the soldier that just hit her.

“Dude, thing, just take me to whatever passes off as a holding cell,” Lyn spoke in an oddly kind tone ignoring Zurik.

“Promised you us to meet in peace,” the Xtzit commander said, “Her take we to Unity’s ship.”

“No,” Zurik responded, “She is ours, a rogue. We’ll handle her.” She cocked her eyebrow at Tood’s unconcious body. “The man will stay with her, maybe his screams will help reform her.”

The Xtzit leave the room after agreeing to resume their meeting at another time. Zurik’s men began to drag Tood away leaving Lyn alone, hands cuffed behind her back, with one guard and Zurik. Lyn bit the inside of her bottom lip, she recalled how harshly prisoners are treated in Solustia.

“He has nothing to do with my presence here,” Lyn finally spoke.

“You feel for that man?” Zurik questioned Lyn.

“He’s,” Lyn thought carefully what her words would be. If they showed too much concern for Tood, they’d try to use it against her. If she didn’t say anything, they’d just take him away never to be heard of again. “He’s Girlbot’s problem, she’ll want him back and I am the only one who can keep up with her.” Zurik took a moment to weigh what Lyn said, to search for an angle or an interest. She knew that Lyn and Girlbot did not get along, and realized that she would have to deal with an upset Girlbot sooner or later. She needed Lyn, and Lyn would be much more cooperative if she appeared to be more understanding of her petty concerns.

“Fine,” Zurik finally responded and faced the guard, “Take her to the same cell as the man. Make sure she gets some time to think about her situation before we begin.” With that the guard guided Lyn out of the lounge.

Lyn found herself in the cold holding cell. It was simple walled in room with one wall made up of strong glass reinforced by a metallic transparent fiber. The glass wall also served as a frame for a sliding door, two guards stood by making sure nothing happened. She looked over to the far corner were Tood’s body lay unconcious. She knew that despite anything that Zurik would ever say, he would still be tortured to see how she would react.

Lyn kneeled right next to Tood turning him on his back. She looked at his face, it was at peace. There was no fear, no concern, no stress in it. She didn’t know exactly what Girlbot did to him or how he came to be. But she did know that he was scared, lost, and afraid. She bit her lip once more weighing whether or not it would be worth it. He did show her that he could fight, but only if he would trust himself, only if he were more confident. But how could he? He was violently thrown into a universe so alien to that which he has grown to know. No matter how human-like Girlbot was, she still was unable to understand humans.

Lyn closed her eyes and took in a deep breath. She removed Tood’s shirt and placed her right hand on his forehead, and her left on his bare chest. The first time she did this, she knew she wasn’t human, or at least not entirely human. All throughout her body, dozens of skin cells began to emit strong rays of radiation transforming the molecular structure of various other cells in other parts of her body. From the outside it seemed as if a radiant nebula began to grow around Lyn. Her eyes became a bright sky blue, her skin began to glow.

        Episode 3 "Solus" Part 5 of 6

        Spoiler:

The cell began to disappear from her perception until all that was left was the nebula, Tood, and herself. Lyn exerted herself through endless bands of green energy belts that appeared before her. At that moment everything blurred out leaving only the feeling of Tood’s forehead and chest underneath her hands until even that went away. The first thing she could sense was the sound of crying human infants. She was standing inside of a room filled with small carts that contained babies.

Each child had a small band wrapped around their tiny fragile wrists, Lyn paid one of them special attention as its eyes opened and saw her. An bright flash ended that moment, she found herself at an indoor food market. A cart held a small tubby child much too young to walk alone, she walked right up to him and smiled. The kid reached its arm out to grab her curly hair. Another flash ended that moment.

The next moment came in the backyard behind a home. Dozens of people were gathered for some feast. Lyn made her way past several individuals until she spotted the little boy playing with a few friends. The eight year old saw her, he was curious as to who this strange lady was. Lyn knelt down until her eyes were at the same level as the boy, she smiled and ruffled his hair with her hand causing him to recoil back. The boy looked towards a older man who was too busy socializing with someone else, almost as if looking for some confirmation as to this stranger’s reliability.

Another flash transported Lyn to chaotic scene. Tents and mobile stands surrounded her, she could hear screams, not out of horror but out of joy. People walking about in a clear sunny evening holding treats and toys engaging in games. Then there he was, the fifteen year old searching for whatever group accompanied him. Lyn walked up to him and smiled right at him, which made him stop his search for an instant. Lyn’s face was familiar, like a shadow from some other time.

“Do I know you?” Tood asked timidly.

“Not yet,” Lyn responded and turned away leaving behind a confused and curious boy.

A flash, an auditorium filled with hundreds of people. An orchestra played a piece of music as a procession of older teenagers walked down to take empty seats at the front of the auditorium dressed in dark blue gowns with square hats and a tassel dangling off to the side. One of the young men stop as they walk once he spots Lyn standing beside the seats along the aisle. His companions behind him push him forward before he is able to ask Lyn any question, Tood recognized her.

Lyn found herself next to a building located in a plaza filled with buildings that shared a similar architecture. Hundreds young adults burst out of these buildings only to enter into another building carrying bag packs, or bags, or only a notebook. She sees Tood walking towards her, she quickly opens the door for him and several others. As the rest entered the building Tood stopped.

Tood stared right into Lyn’s eyes, it was a face he knows, but at the same time he doesn’t. A face that draws across some invisible shield. Part of him feels a cool surface on his back and a warm set of hands on his body. Lyn steps closer to Tood only to appear inside of a sterile room surrounded by medical equipment, Tood was on a table prepped for some cryogenic procedure. He was sedated but still conscious. Someone recently left the room, “Girlbot” Lyn said, she could feel her presence through the time stream.

Tood saw Lyn as she stood over him.

“Wha-” before Tood could finish asking anything, Lyn places her both hands on his shoulders keeping him from getting him up. She firmly presses him down and leans over him.

“I know you,” Lyn spoke, “And you know me. I have seen you, and you have seen me. I am now part of your past, your universe. Don’t be afraid.”

Tood’s moment of recognition, the same one he has shown each moment in his past quickly starts to fade. Lyn needed to do something quickly. Each time she has presented herself to Tood, she embeded a temporal memory, one that is only activated by her presence in his past but only for a brief instant. That instant was fleeting as well as its effect on Tood. As soon as she returns to the present all that would be left one quick moment of understanding, she needed more. Tood needed more.

Lyn leaned down further until her lips were within inches from Tood’s.

“When you remember, remember this,” Lyn whispered and inched her lips closer to Tood’s lips. Her hair fell over unto the table, one lock of her hair tickled his ear.

“Remember that you can’t ask questions, just get up and fight them.”

Lyn’s lips touched Tood’s. They shared a small kiss, one that would trigger all of Tood’s memories, all of his senses sharpened at that instant. His eyes widened, his mind went blank. The last thing he remembered was laying on the table as Girlbot walked out, having promised him that he would be treated for some sort of condition, and now she’s there...kissing him. What felt like minutes was actually a few seconds, a quick kiss. Lyn pulled back slightly.

“Be brave,” she said, and then one final flash engulfed her as she kissed Tood once more. When she stood up, she felt the cold of the cell, Tood opened his eyes, and saw Lyn spin lifting her right leg crashing her foot into one of the two guards that rushed in. The guard was flung by the force of the kick headfirst on to the wall. The other one had her pain stick out ready to stab Lyn with it.

Lyn dived into a shoulder roll towards the first guard as she was getting up. Lyn elbowed the guard across her face with one arm, and with one of her hands grabbed the guard’s painstick and slapped it against the second guard’s ankle as she approached thus sending her down to the floor in convulsions. At this point Tood was on his feet and just stared at Lyn as she got up and made her way to the open cell door. Tood followed her out into the corridor after delivering one swift kick that knocked out the second guard. He spotted two guards running towards them with painsticks in their hands. Without reservation Tood ran right at them, it’s what Lyn would do.

Lyn jumped up against one wall and used her leg to push her to the opposite wall. She landed infront of Tood blocking his path as the two guards were pulling out their guns. She dropped to the floor and threw the painstick that she had at the guard on her right. She cartwheeled up to the guard on the left as the guard on the right lost her weapon after the painstick smashed into her hand.

Lyn slammed her palm right into the guard’s chest and quickly followed up with kick to her ribs. Tood smashed his shoulder into the other guard before she could recover her weapon. Lyn grabbed the dazed guard she kicked and used her as support as she threw herself into the air landing avoided two shots from an additional two guards who fired their guns. She repositioned the guard as a human shield, which blocked two lethal shots.

Tood was still wrestling with the other guard when he finally grabbed hold of the painstick Lyn threw at her and jabbed it into the guard’s chest. Lyn grabbed the painstick from her dead human shield and flung it at the other two guards who dodged it. That gave her enough time to palm the dead guard’s gun, go into another shoulder roll and fire two deadly shots at the armed guards before they could re-aim their guns at her. Lyn turned and ran back towards Tood who was just standing up, catching his breath. She pulled him by his arm and rand down the hall towards an elevator.

          Episode 3 "Solus" Part 6 of 6

          Spoiler:

The elevator’s doors opened up with three more guards inside. Lyn quickly shot all three of them before they could do anything and pushed Tood inside. Tood pressed “up” command and selected a level. The elevator doors closed as two more guards began to fire at them. The Elevator stopped and the roof was torn off.

Lyn aimed her gun up, but then lowered it. Girlbot stood above with her arms crossed and her eyes blood red.

“Girlbot!” Tood called out. Girlbot jumped down into the elevator and removed the control pad revealing an intricate maze of wires and crystals. She placed her hand on it, and after a brief moment the elevator began moving up again.

“How did you find us?” Tood asked. Girlbot turned around and faced Tood.

“I found you,” she emphasized the fact that she was talking about Tood, “She almost made it impossible if I didn’t have a tracker on you.” Girlbot’s search would have been much faster if she was able to see twenty minutes into the future, Lyn’s presence ended that option. All she could see were random sequences that made little sense.

“How much higher until you can beam us onto your ship?” Lyn asked.

“Us?” Girlbot responded in mock surprise, “I’m taking Tood, you can stay here and find your own way out.”

“Girlbot,” Tood protested, “No, I want her to come.”

“Forget it, this is a bad crush for you to have,” Girlbot answered.

“Crush?” Lyn asked, “Girlbot, you’ll beam me out of this place now along with Tood.”

“Don’t tell me what to do,” Girlbot spat back.

“Obviously someone has too, as soon as they realize that-” Lyn stops, two thumps, followed by two more on the roof interrupt them. Solustian Kyrie soldiers have landed on the roof. Lyn fired her gun up through the hole that Girlbot game through to dissuade them from trying to jump down. Girlbot grabbed onto Tood.

“You,” Lyn began to say. A flash of light engulfed Tood and Girlbot.

The two found themselves on the Girlbot One’s bridge as the bridge crew was busy flying ship out of the hanger into open space. Tood turned and shoved Girlbot taking her by surprise.

“Get her out of there!” Tood demanded. Girlbot was confused, she has never seen him so infuriated with her or anyone.

“She’ll be fine, it’s her home she can.”

“Beam her up here!! Now!” Tood continued to scream. He took hold of Girlbot’s shoulders, “Please, bring her on board.” Tood didn’t know exactly why, all he could remember was a kiss.

The bridge crew was silent. “Bring her here,” Tood repeated himself pinning Girlbot against one of the computer terminals, “Or send me back. You owe me big, you ruined my life and this is the least you can do.” Tood stared at Girlbot. No one was sure what would happen next. Girlbot closed her eyes.

“Send me back!” Tood shouted at the crew after hearing no answer from Girlbot.

“Wuss, I’d threaten to beat her fake face in if I were you.”

Tood turned around to see that it was Lyn who spoke. He backed away from Girlbot relieved and now finally realizing what he did and what he said.

“You kissed me...” Tood said, the kiss was the only thing he remembered clearly.

          “You did what?” Girlbot asked.

“You finally stood up for yourself,” Lyn said as she walked up towards Tood.

“About that, Tood,” Girlbot spoke, “do that again an I’ll have you spaced.”

The Girlbot One jumped into space. Later on Girlbot, Lyn, and Tood were in the ship’s lounge. Tood wasn’t sure what happened, but he felt better now. Girlbot and Lyn hardly said anything to eachother and barely spoke to Tood. Both Girlbot and Lyn weren’t exactly the best of friends. Tood still didn’t know why the two didn’t get alone when they seem to be on the same side.

“The Xtzit are forming an alliance with the Solustians who have infiltrated the Protectorate’s senate with their agents,” Girlbot finally spoke. What little has been said was about what took place on Solus II. Not personal details, just general intelligence that was gathered.

“There’s been some uproar about Earth joining, and the treaty with Homeplanet,” Lyn said.

“Your Protectorate is falling apart, it has been for the past hundred years,” Girlbot finally said.

It was true, the Protectorate was fractured. Several factions have begun acting on their own. The military has become weak, and with the Sherr’is’sh Empire in expansion again and unknown raids from the Rim has made many nervous, to the point in accepting the membership of a questionable militarized civilization, Earth.

None of this was important to Tood, not on a more personal level. Girlbot and Lyn didn’t say more than they had to. He felt that somehow they were talking for his sake. Something kept bugging him though, something Girlbot said when they arrived on the bridge.

“What did you mean that it was her home?” Tood asked.

          “She’s Solustian,” Girlbot said.

“No,” Lyn interjected,” I am not native to their civilization, just raised as a Solustian.”

“Then where is your home?” Tood asked.

“I don’t know,” Lyn said, “I was found by Solustian traders when I was eight years old. Before I travelled with some space nomads. The Solustians raised me as one of them, even tried to get me to be exactly like them.”

“Tood, they were once a great people, a kind people,” Lyn said, “Somehow along the way they started to get dark. Somehow they realized that I’m not exactly Human, they wanted me to be a weapon.”

“You did something, I can’t remember what though,” Tood said. Girlbot stepped in and gave Lyn a judgemental glare.

          “What?” Tood jumped up.

“I had to,” Lyn sheepishly responded. Tood remembered the kiss, how he automatically jumped into action, Lyn did something to him. He didn’t like it at all.

“For your mission right? Since when do the rangers spy on Member governments?” Girlbot spoke.

“What did she do?” Tood asked Girlbot.

“I don’t know,” Girlbot said, “But it had an impressive effect on you.”

Girlbot got up and walked towards the door.

“Don’t get too comfortable Lyn, we have to figure out what’s going on.” Girlbot opened the door and walked out knowing that Lyn was exactly what Tood needed. Whatever it is she did to him, it was the right thing.

“What did you do?” Tood still asked. Lyn bit her lip, she really didn’t want to say.

“You need some rest.” Lyn responded.

“You’re Solustian, that’s what Girlbot hinted at before she beamed you up,” Tood said.

“Yes,” Lyn asked, “But not by birth.”

Tood wanted to ask more about that, but before he had a chance, Lyn stood up and walk out as well. Perhaps he should get some rest. The three are apparently going to do something big, Tood knows that Girlbot wants to go after Boybot. She didn’t mention anything to Lyn, but he could tell that she wants her help, she just doesn’t want to ask for it. That would be Tood’s job.

But that kiss, he could still feel it. And all of a sudden Lyn’s eyes appeared to him. Those eyes that have always drawn him in. Not just recently, but for many years those eyes have been in the deepest area of his mind. Something inside of him felt better, like if a part of home was still with him. He would work through the shock, through the fear, and maybe even do something amazing.

How is Lyn able to do that in him? He recalled how she first snuck up on him, no sound, no indication of her presence. She called him a puppy, now he was just a wuss. She was confusing to Tood.
