Episode 3 "Solus" Part 3 of 6
Tood slowly walked outside of the office, across the reception area, and into the main hallway. It was his chance. His electro-neuro interface alerted him of new files coming in from Girlbot. They were schematics of the palace with instructions to find out why the main reception hall is busy.
Tood decided to go around most of the direct routes to the main reception hall by heading towards the southern side of the palace. He found a hallway with a simplistic wall on his left and no wall on his right. A simple waist high decorative yet sturdy safety rail that looked like miniature buttresses was the only thing that would keep anyone from accidentally stepping off to a two hundred foot drop.
The hallway had various doors to the left every twenty feet and ended about five hundred feet away from his current position. At that point he would be able to enter into the last door and find a air vent that he could use to sneak his way down to the ground floors and move towards the reception halls. Hopefully Girlbot wouldn’t be expecting a quick job.
Tood passed one of the doors and heard it open. For that moment his body froze completely. Before he could remind himself that they knew he was there and that he was authorized to walk about. Though he was going in the wrong direction he could probably make up a simple excuse. Before he could turnaround, however, he felt the intense blow from a blunt object at the back of his head.
The blow sent Tood dashing forward, his vision began to blur, unconsciousness would soon follow. His bionic systems began to compensate by pumping extra adrenaline and activating most of his cognitive nodes to replace his failing neurological systems in an effort to keep him awake. He felt the unknown person grab his shirt, pull him back and swing him at the wall. Tood dropped himself to the floor and rolled over towards the safety rail. With his vision still blurred and his fluid reflexes, he was unable to get up before a black military type boot crushed his chest pushing all the wind out of him.
His hands reached for the leg in a green pants, he knew that it was a guard. Tood used all the strength that his shocked body could muster and pulled himself in a sitting position still holding on to the leg of the quite possibly surprised guard. The blow to his head was hard enough to drop even the toughest person, Tood’s bionics managed to keep him awake and kicking, literally kicking. As he attempted knock his attacker over by throwing his shoulder at him, or rather her, she bent over, grabbed the rail pulled herself as she jumped over the rail freeing her foot from Tood’s grasp. Tood stood up and saw the unexpected, she was gone.
“Why on earth did she jump?” Tood asked himself out loud.
Below him he saw a grappling hook with flying up towards him. He ducked out of the way, the hook attached itself to the ceiling. Within a second, she zoomed right up and landed on the rail. She spun and kicked Tood in the face sending him down to the ground. Tood recognized her and instead of getting up he just rolled on to his back and looked up.
“Lyn?” Tood spoke panting from the five second fight.
“Oh hi Tood,” Lyn responded pulling back the grappling hook into her grappling gun which looked a lot like her ray gun.
“Was any of that necessary?” Tood asked. Lyn walked up to Tood and set her foot on his chest sending his back down to the ground. She aimed her gun right at Tood’s face.
“It would have been easier if you just fell down and didn’t get up,” Lyn said.
“This is? You’re a?” Tood asked.
“A soldier for these people?” Lyn finished his question, “Honey, I am not from this world. I wouldn’t want to be. Get up.” Lyn backed up still aiming her gun at Tood.
“I don’t even like being here,” Lyn continued talking as Tood got to his feet, “I don’t think any sane person would. These people are as weird as you can get.”
“So why attack me?” Tood asked.
“I didn’t recognize you, just saw that you were a guy and, well, I needed a reason to get into some of the more restricted areas which include the holding cells,” Lyn said.
“And jumping off the building was necessary?” Tood continued asking
“It worked,” Lyn shrugged, “Here, put these on.” Lyn threw a pair of old looking handcuffs at Tood. Tood caught them and stared incredulously back at Lyn. “You’re making this harder than it should be, do it,” Lyn insisted.
“No, I have a better idea,” Tood countered, “Just take me to the main reception hall. Pretend that I am wanted there.”
“Why would you be wanted there?” Lyn asked.
“I don’t know, make something up,” Tood said. Lyn stood thinking for a moment.
“This isn’t going to work,” Lyn said, “But it’s still worth a try. Where is she, Tood?”
“Locked up, for now” Tood answered, Lyn smiled and holstered her gun. Tood fastened the hand cuffs with his hands at the front. Lyn grabbed him by the cuffs and began pulling him along. They went through one of the doors and passed two guards unquestioned. Upon entering a small lift, Lyn broke the silence they had.
“Just act all scared and wimpy like you usually do, you’ll be fine,” Lyn said.
“Thanks for the encouragement,” Tood responded. Lyn sucked her buttom lip in.
“Just act like my prisoner. I know you can do this on your own, but together we both get through security a lot easier,” Lyn said in a reassuring tone.
They managed to pass through each checkpoint with minimal problems. Very few guards questioned their authenticity. After the finally check point they finally made their way towards the reception section of the palace. Tood and Lyn had to be careful not to be spotted, the less interaction with security, the better. At this point their cover might not work as well.
