Long before you and I were born, others beat these benches with their empty cups,
To the night and its stars, to the here and now with who we are.
Another sunrise with my sad captains, with who I choose to lose my mind,
And if it's all we only pass this way but once, what a perfect waste of time.

Of late I too have been listening to the classics, but done with a twist. For example(s):
I used to think that anyone who made a serious attempt at trying to do a cover of the Louis Armstrong classic should found, chained to their bed, doused in lighter fluid and set ablaze as a lesson to others. Maybe I was a bit harsh in this belief. I heard this cover and my mind was changed.
I'm also a fan of Jacques Loussier, whose jazz trio has done some amazing renditions of various pieces of music from the classical genre:

Listening to the song that gives me instant happy feels...
...where I visualize a wide open space -- Scotland or the Sierra Nevada (Spain) -- with the wolf pack down below in the valley running wild, and myself up on the ridge enjoying the view. Sometimes it's raining with the sun in the background, sometimes it's clear skies all the way.

My ears are (partially) back from Japan. Here's something(s) from a local Vancouver band, The Dreadnoughts.
They are a pretty interesting group of guys, with a lot of academic credentials amongst them. As an example, the drummer has a M.Sc. in Physics:
This goes back to their second album:
