Is your family prepared for a major emergency?

After watching the events unfold in the US States of Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida and other states affected by Katrina; and having myself lived in California for the past 40 years and have been marginally affected by several earthquakes (including '89's Loma Prieta earthquake), I wanted to post the following information for the continued safety of our forum members.

The first item I wanted to mention is -- that NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE -- be it large or small city; large or small county; large or small COUNTRY; large or small CONTINENT -- that in the event of a major widespread emergency -- YOU and YOUR family will be without BASIC services for at LEAST FOUR DAYS in the event of a wide spread emergency.

And you CAN do something in advance, to help assist you and your family survive those FOUR DAYS of being without BASIC SERVICES -- meaning -- potable water, electricity, heating fuel, fuel for your car, food, medicine, and so on -- and being without ACCESS to EMERGENCY SERVICES -- police, fire and medical.

The Los Angeles Fire Department prepared a Handbook for surviving the aftermath of a major earthquake. A lot of the items pertain not only to earthquake survival, but also to survival of other emergencies:

    LAFD EARTHQUAKE HANDBOOK INDEX
    http://www.lafd.org/eqindex.htm

(The handbook still states a 72-hour minimum for being stranded, that time frame was updated to 96-hour minimum recently, and the site hasn't been updated.)

Some of the items that I practice include keeping a safety kit not only in the trunk of my car, but also in the workspace at work (and I've got one already at my new job).

Most of the items are common sense and low priced.

Here are some other links for other sites that offer guides for surviving disasters:
