    In no partucular order:

M*A*S*H (classic comedy able to mix laughs with drama)
Chuck (hilarious and fun, the best hour I spend each week)
SG-1 (ultimate Stargate... Atlantis never really grabbed my attention and Universe is downright awful)
How It's Made (just fascinates me)
Dirty Jobs (great deal of gross factor)
Sanford and Son (another classic comedy)

Anything on any of the following channels:

C-SPAN (great way to keep up with politics without subjecting yourself to the talking heads)
    NatGeo (ver interesting programming)
    Science (another great lineup)
History (though it tends to veer into sensationalism at times)
"Colonel listen to me. Speech is thought verbalized. Languages are codes. I'm a linguist. I'm a codebreaker. Don't you see? If I can do this I can read their minds."

So many crime shows, and The Wire isn't even mentioned. I am very disappointed in you, Linda.

It's among the best shows I've ever had the pleasure of watching. It may move a bit slow in the beginning, but you're hooked after three episodes or so. It is truly one of the best crime dramas ever (IMO). It's very dark, and it can get depressing at times, but I enjoy dark shows. Not to mention that it's more realistic than shows like CSI where they catch the bad guy within an episode, and he's put away for life. In reality, things don't always work out that well. I would definitely say that it's worth buying or renting the first season.

                    Well, no pressure then

I think Sky has the Wire on FX or something like that.

It is on FX, though I'd recommend getting the box sets. It will ruin all other tv for you (especially the crime genre) as you will not find a better acted or written show out there. You'll wish all tv was that good.

I never got into the show when it was on, and only decided to give it a go (illegally, of course) several months ago.

As soon as I finished watching the series, I went out and bought the complete series box set to watch it again. And the only reason I waited that long to buy it was because I was so engrossed in the series that I didn't want to take a break to go out and get it

                            Brilliant, brilliant series.

I've just finished the first season, myself, but I've already ordered the second season, which should arrive in the amin tomorrow or on friday. I could use illegal means to watch the second season, but I've already ordered the S2, so why not wait a couple of days anyway. Although I will probably be forced to use illegal means for the rest of the show, because I'm not made of money.

I think that brilliant is an understatement. I can't think of a word that would even begin to describe just how good the show is.

You're right, but it's the best I could come up with on short notice

How about....genius. That fits. And I don't think it's setting the bar too high either.
