In UNIVERSE when they thought the ship was going to burn up in a star a prayer group formed and they were saying the Lord's Prayer. A major character's Catholic background is a major part of his back story. And the message he left in case of his death was the 23rd Psalm.

Seen a few posts mention this , but actually we do know how some would react if the Stargate program ever went public in the series. Just look at how Sen/VP Mckinsey viewed all of it, thinking that God would just swoop in and stop the Goauld from trying to enslave/destroy Earth. Would've been kinda interesting to see how irrational his reaction to the Ori would've been. X'D

Unfortunately i think alot of people would have similar reactions in reality too.

          1. In SG-1 it was demonstrated that a lot of Mythology was influenced by Extraterrestrials of one kind or another. Obviously the writers strayed away from involving any mainstream religions. But it wouldn't be hard to figure out that miracles performed by various prophets could actually be ET's with advanced tech.

          2. What would Christian characters think about alien races? If Jesus was only on earth, what will happen to the billions of other humanoid races out there? How would they be saved?

          3. In Stargate, the human race came from the ancients, not a higher power.
It doesn't make sense because it's the influence of evolution on Sci Fi.
It's a theory take as fact just like many religious individual take their religion as fact and SG-1 is nothing more than a huge contradiction between the two.

Yep. In a nutshell, it doesn't really make sense, so let's just ignore it and move along
I suppose an out-of-universe explanation is "to make the fictional universe seem similar to the real one despite it not really being the slightest bit similar at all".

            No, that's theistic evolution.
Intelligent design is the argument that life is proof their is a creator (of some sort) in the same way as a painting is proof of a painter or a building is proof of a builder. And theistic evolution makes no sense anyway. (It's like building a tractor to replace your horse and then saying 'I can make the horse pull the tractor, so they can work together!'. Though the tractor actually only goes in reverse and trying to tie them together kills the horse.)

If you want to have an idea of how religious people respond to 'new realities' read history. Particularly the account of the astronomers and 'heliocentricity'. Read what happened to Galileo and the role the church played in it.

Religions condmen new ideas that run contrary to their teachings up until the time those new ideas are so widespread they can't ignore them...so they assimilate them, explaining how they don't really contradict their beliefs at all.

Current believers would have been imprisoned or executed 1000 years ago as blasphemers.

If the stargate reality was revealed, religions would assimilate it, so you would still have religious characters.

Really, the religious have a hard time letting go.
But that's the effect a tradition on people.
I imagine that if Stargate did happen it would have the same effect in real life. Some would turn away others would see it as a test of faith but it all depends on how condemning the evidence is.

So far Stargate has never said there is no such thing as God but that there are alien false Gods. People have been impersonating God's for quite some time on Earth, Stargate merely takes that into the future.

My definition of God which excludes most Earth and Extra Galactic representatives is an Intelligent, All Powerful, All Knowing, Creative/Destructive Force of great Benevolence.

Like everything under Earth Religion is used as an arm of control.
It's nothing more than politicians spinning a lie in the face of the truth. It's neither particularly indicative of religion or exclusive to religion. Religion today really works more off ignorance than anything else and where as yesteryears it was inforced ignorance, now it's self maintained ignorance.

In other words Religion isn't superstition but it does employ it about 90 percent of the time.

                Now look at Politics.
Politics isn't lies and cover ups but it does employ it about 90 percent of the time.

                Little difference.
The common thread is man. These are his tools in a system of control.
