I understand the political side of it all but things are changing fast and they'd be surprise on how much ratings they can get for promoting a "lead" female character then again, it also depends on how they write them. If that ever happens, I hope they don't stereotype how a "female" should be like they stereotype most of the male roles. "macho, etc etc etc.." I know I'm probably a little bias here
PS, sorry for rambling on and if I've offended anyone i assure you it was completly unintentional.

Small scale units with exceptionally demanding human entry requirements that place an emphasis on 'people plus technology' (and not the other way round) to fulfill operational requirements.
Tier 1 - Higher capability units such as the Delta Force, SEAL Team 6, SAS, SBS.
Tier 2 - SEALS, Green Berets
Tier 3 - (more specialised and much smaller units that are often associated with special forces but perhaps owe their origins more towards dedicated intelligence formations) eg, Special Reconnaissance Regiment & Grey Fox.
Special Forces undertake direct action, advance force ops (ie insertion before the main body of ground troops to perform specific missions), and supporting/training indigenous forces.
Special Operations Force:
More holistic term that broadens the spectrum of soldiers and units who work with special forces to include Rangers and the 'Special Forces Support Group' that are conventional forces geared towards raiding missions, supporting aviation, supporting signals and psychological operations units as well as civil affairs. SOF have a much broader remit and are given ten core activities that include direct actiion, strategic reconnnaissance, unconventional warfare, foreign internal defence, civil affairs, psyops, counter terrorism, humanitarian assistance, theatre search and rescue and special activities authorised by the civilian leadership (ie the President).
Despite the small unit number of SG teams - I'm inclined to regard the entirety of Stargate Command's military personnel as an SOF 'Regiment' or 'Corps' or similar and that it just has smaller units. I personally feel SG teams fit more into the description of SOF units as opposed to SF units.
Anyway, that's just a little FYI.

Amanda Tapping does it very well (as expected given she is half British) and it goes very well with the character of Dr. Magnus given her aristocratic and scientific background.

Thanks for the explanation of "dire". There are just some things one doesn't know about until the question is asked.
About her accent though... how would we really know how her accent would have evolved? I mean she's lived through all those years and heard the accent of all the people she's around grow and change. Would she have changed with them or developed something uniquely her own? Makes me wonder. For me I figure that gives her some creative license for it. =0) Then again it's Amanda and I'm incredibly forgiving when it comes to her.

SOF and SF are pretty much used interchangeably they have no hard and fast definitions. Special Forces also don't fit into 3 tiers neatly anymore because they bleed over. The best way to classify them now would be by the jobs they do. I don't think anyone here is really interested in that though, I can post it on request though.

And, we do have a thread in the sanctuary folder, so that aspect should be taken there please. This thread is about female characters, not in depth discussion of their accents

English huh? I don't know where I got French then. I only watched a few episode... I thought I heard them talking about France a lot? Maybe I'm mistaken.. But regardless..I still think..it's..awkward the way it sounded...It's like half English and half American? That's just my take.
As for male dominants in military..well I'm not going to pretend I know much about military operation. Well, if you put it that way, sure, you're probably right to assume that Stargate franchise wants to reflect more of the realistic side of the military operation.
But fiction is fiction and we're talking about science fiction here... How realistic is it really? It's all up to the writer's imagination.. Altho I do agree that they can't go too far away from reality. But what I'm talking about here is the potentials of female lead roles.
See, I didn't used to care who plays what role but more and more so I see more male characters than female. I don't care if they intended for 'inner geek' gentleman or not. If they have the ideas to bring in more diversity, say how Dr. Weir's role was developed then I strongly believe they can do better than just having a male lead roles.
It's a fair argument to say that everytime a female character is presented in a main cast, she almost always becomes very popular. Well, IMO I think that's because it's so RARE! and the majority of the population is female... I think women likes seeing somewhat of a representation, if not representation, some sort of relation and similarity to the character.
If there is such a thing as 'inner geek' (whatever that is ) for men..then there's such thing as "insert your own word" for women.
Now I'm not saying I don't like male character for having the lead roles. I am saying creating a diversity. I want to tell the writers out there, the producers out there to be more creative instead of falling into the same old male dominant roles of the characters.
I think we grew up to watch shows with so many male characters that it became a part of our lives...and we've gotten so used to it that to most, it really does not matter. Well, I used to feel that way too. But I think times are changing and so should our television HEHE IMOLast edited by Spirit; 14 May 2009, 07:13 PM.
