Late to the Game / When to start watching Atlantis

Having just started watching Stargate SG-1 a couple of years ago I'm finally up to Season 8 (on DVD). Knowing there is crossover between Stargate SG-1 and Stargate: Atlantis, when and how do I need to start watching Atlantis to not be confused when crossovers between the two series start?

For instance, last night while watching Zero Hour on SG-1, a reference is made to Pegasus (which I know is the galaxy where Atlantis is), but that is all.

You can... but you wont get the full experience..
after all.. SG-1 visits Atlantis in season10.. can easily become confusing

Stick to Star Wars. It is far superior to Stargate. The story of Anakim's life alone is far more interesting than all episodes of SG-1 and SGA put together.
