I was responding to the post which stated the wormhole could not form due to the iris. If it can't form, how can it be active, and it's reflection be visible?

You misunderstood. The wormhole can form when the iris is closed, because it is placed just slightly ahead of the event horizon. It was only in the episode '48 Hours' that they moved the iris far enough into the gate that it would prevent the wormhole from establishing, just as it would if it was buried.
