I don't know about places like America, but where I live 10 year olds curse all the time when out of the hearing of teachers in the school playground. I think as most 10 year olds probably have older siblings or parents whio frequently curse and swear around the house so it's not as much of an issue, but the average kid doesn't see nude women often.

Or maybe it's more to do with what the actors are willing to do on screen. If you were in a hit TV show, would you rather be seen across the globe cursing or naked?
    Spoiler:
    You say that a lot.
    What?
    "Indeed"
    Do I?
    Yeah.
    I had not noticed.

Look at the most famous actresses at the moment and i think you will find that a rather large proportion of them have done at least 1 nude scene in their careers.

Obviously im not expert but i think most actors are willing to do nude scenes if it is important to the plot. David Hewlett was naked on set of "Duet" and even though you didnt see anything he probably wouldnt have had a problem with showing abit more skin if the writers had wanted it.

Because they are under pressure from the industry to do so. It is hard for a female actress to make a successful career without it.

Bolded parts for emphasis. As it turns out, this sequences was forced upon the creators by the network and not something they wanted in the first place. Add to that the fact that this scene is the only one of it's type in more than 10 years of storytelling and to me, it just clashes with the artisitic style of the rest of the show.

Now then, if we were talking about cutting out a nude scene by Amanda Tapping or Torri Higginson, I would totally be up in arms and uproar

I guess it's rooted in cultural differences. People of the US in general are much more sensitive (some might even say prudent) about nudity than Eurropeans. Let me just tell you an example.

I studied in a dual language high school where I had some American teachers. When I was a first year student (age 15) I had a young teacher from Dallas called Daniel. He was a nice guy always up for some fun he even tried to teach us how to play baseball. One morning I walked into the school I saw that there was an exhibition in the main hall of nice pictured calendars. Those were artistic pieces and some of them had pictures of nude women. Not in a pornographic but in an artistic way. Some of the pictures were really nice and gave you a sense of the beauty of the human body. Everyone was pleased to see these beautyful pictures and we walked into the classrooms with a smile on our faces because we thought this day actually started well. Then Daniel came into the room with a deep red face in total embarassment and uttered: "When I walked into the school I saw a naked lady! Is that OK here?"

We were really suprised by his reaction but we realized that he has a different cultural background. Nudity is much less acceptable in certain cultures than others. Is it silly? It might seem so from one perspective but for those people it's natural and I don't think any of us has the right to judge them for that.

I am in late in the game, but first, don't say that America has problem with nudity and other countries it's a ok. If thats the case, why is it Doctor Who has no nudity in it, hmmmm? An Tourchwood? Hmmm?

                (no to original poster)
And with movies, it's a ok, I can name tons of American movies that have nudity, but the fact is TV is something every little kid can watch. I 3 year old could turn on the TV and watch whatever they want. So I would assume your perfectly ok with your children watching nudity? Having your child exposed to that at such a young would be great! Oh, wait, um, of course thats not great.

And why is it worse then violence? Honestly, can't answer that one. But the violence on SG-1 is not violence, honestly, but Atlantis in my opinion has upped the anny on violence....i mean, with a head and all being cut off.

And lastly, there's another reason for this. Would seeing boobies make you happier and make the story better? Actually, to tell you the truth, I wouldn't want to watch SG-1 if it was about nudity. I HATE writers/directors who make their show/movie all about who is naked in it. Why can't you sell your **** with no sex? So your telling me you would rather have boobs or penis all over SG-1? Maybe see O'Neil naked a few times, hmmm? Would that make you happy? Make the story better.

Oh yes, thats right, I remember now....in "The Lost City" I was so wanting to see O'Neil naked in that chair. Man would that make the story better!!

Or in Season 3 finale, "Out of Mind", I sooo should have seen all of sg-1 naked when they pulled them out. That would have made the show soooo much more interesting and better.

No. No. and more no. If you ever want to add to a show, to a movie, to a story, you never need nudity. And if you don't need it, why put it in there?

i would be okay with my child seeing nudity, as it is not erotic

i would have an issue with the violence on the show if we were getting brains splattering on the wall, or blood spraying in the air or stuff like that.

most of the violence is rather tame. jack shoots his gun, the jaffa fall, end of scene. I see more violence than that in a sports bar during a game

there are times when nudity is part of the show. like in brief candle and in seeing jack 'nude' we knew that he and kynthia had really gotten to know each other.

but you know, i didn't need to see them going at it, nor did i need to see her bare chest or his bare butt (although that would have been a ratings maker, let me tell you )

shau'ri's scene was just there for the titilation factor. pun intended. because they shot the other actress and DIDN'T show her assets and that was fine. and, i'm presuming, that's because the actress didn't go for it while valitere agreed to the nudity.

the violation and vulnerability could have been convayed just as well without the nudity.

if you're shooting a scene one way 'just because you can' then maybe you should stop and think and see if you really need to be doing it.

because, hey, i'd trade shau'ri's full monty for another 60 seconds of character interaction in other places.

A filming technique which always annoys me is the one where a character is naked and some completely random object is covering their breasts and/or genitals. This technique was done alot in Austin Powers movies but in non comedy television it just doesnt feel right.

The only occasion i can think of where this happened in Stargate was the episode "The Torment of Tantalus" in season 1. The old man was naked but random objects were always between him and the camera. This was a scene where nudity was needed as he only had 1 set of cloths and it would be extremely unlikely that they could survive over 40 years. Instead of using the random objects techniques why not just show him completely in the buff. I know some people may wince at the idea of seeing a old naked man but it would add to the realism of the scene.

Indeed. Whenever I see a scene where they do it like that I sigh and think "you know, it doesn't kill me if I see a person's body".

The point isn't that we're all a bunch of nudists over here - believe me, I'm British, they are as prudish as they come - but that we don't go into collective meltdown at the accidental site of a boob (with the nipple covered up)

About Torchwood - I don't follow the media reports or anything so this is a genuine question: is all the gay stuff left in? All the full on, tonsil hockey snogs?

I didn't know at the time, and am not that bothered about it for reasons I've stated above, that the Stargate PTB neither wanted nor included the nude scene in COTG. It works just as well without it.

The nudity in Tormet of Tantalus was brilliantly handled - one thing I would have moaned about had Ernest had a change of clothes with him.

And I don't mind my Gruesomes watching Stargate, including violence, for the reasons Skydiver outlined above.

There isn't usually a need to show naked bodies. But we don't just get naked to do sex (in fact, it can be more fun not to...) It shocks some people, but ads here for shower gel often have naked bottoms and sometimes boobs in them. I don't think we're experiencing a moral decline (but then, I probably wouldn't notice, I don't get out much)

Now see, I really don't like seeing nudity on television, simply because I think it's something that's inherently private (though not wrong), but I'd have no problem with breastfeeding. That's probably because of how I grew up, where occasional nudity was embarrassing but not scarring, but where our community was full of mothers who had no problem breastfeeding openly. Just because you don't like one thing doesn't mean you're a prude—just a product of how you grew up. I have no problem with nudity among societies where it is customary, but in the U.S. the human body is usually treated as something protected by privacy.

ernest's nudity made sense, as others have said. the dude went through the gate with only the clothes on his back and was marooned alone for 40 years. the climate was warm enough that he didn't need clothes so, he wore none.

no big deal. and it was shot in such a way that you didn't 'see' anything.

i didn't need to see jack's bare tush to know that he and kynthia got carnal, or see daniel's bare butt to know that he just got out of the shower in legacy...the robe and damp hair was sign enough (and michael's pants leg visible under the robe was funny)

beyond a porn movie, do you really NEED nudity? seriously, if two characters are going to have sex, do you need to SEE them doing it to know it's been done???

Unless it's a movie that deals with the ramifications of the act or the act is used to illustrate that she or he are 'bad' or disfuctional in some way, do you really need it spelled out for you that they're having sex?

if you don't need it, why show it?
