Of course, that's assuming the Wraith aren't building ships right now, which would be stupid since they've been at war for about 2.5 years now.
    Well, let's check out.

TIRUS: *Picks a piece of equipment up* This data storage device was recovered from the downed Wraith Dart.

MCKAY: It’s a flash memory jump drive.

TIRUS: It contains information about the hive ship that was deployed from.

KALAN: Tirus and his daughter have been able to successfully access that information *tirus sits at type of computer*.

    MCKAY: How?

TIRUS: Through this interface. *connects device*

    MCKAY: Really?

TIRUS: We believe this…*points* is where a wraith ship still sleeps.

MCKAY: The wraith…tend to self destruct…Its hard to get a hold of something like this. You been able to access any other data?

TIRUS: With this interface device…we can access the Wraith ships data core.

SHEPPARD: So this is what your whole plan is based on?

MCKAY: Well how does getting access to a wraith ships computer help you?

TIRUS: With this interface device we can learn the location of all the wraiths ships…

SHEPPARD: So you know where to deliver your new bombs.

    FORD: Makes sense.

SHEPPARD: Assuming of course The wraith ship we’re looking at is still there.

TIRUS: Well if the wraith are in no hurry to rally their forces as you claim. Then it will be.

SHEPPARD: This ship is no where near the Stargate. Approaching it undetected by foot is impossible.

KALAN: That is where your ship comes in Major Sheppard.

SHEPPARD: I was wondering when my ship would come in.
Then, at the end, when Grodin fiddles with the device.

WEIR: *Sheppard walks up* Major…I thought you might like to see this

PETER: A lot of the information we downloaded from the data storage device was encrypted so we’re still working on that.

SHEPPARD: Yeah I didn’t think it would be easy.

PETER: But we were able to ascertain the existence of 21 wraith hive ships just in our quarter of the Pegasus galaxy alone.

    SHEPPARD: 21?

PETER: And there are indications of far more elsewhere in Pegasus.

    SHEPPARD: How many more?

PETER: Well there’s no way of knowing for sure…perhaps sixty or more…

SHEPPARD: That’s a lot of ships.
The device was salvaged from a Dart. The Dart belongs to a hiveship, which itself belongs to a tribe.

There's no real reason that the tribe would be aware of the position and numbering of ships from the other Wraith tribes.

Now, first notice how Peter, even after having access to the device and after the mission on the hiveship, can't even give a very sure low end.

See how "perhaps sixty or more" is a lousy estimate when you supposedly have access to solid numbers.

Secondly, notice the "how many more", which could make it at least 21 + 60, contrary to the only total of 60 people think about generally.

See, they were sure about 21 in the quadrant, without knowing fore sure which tribe these ships belonged to. If anything, it's at least sure they belonged to the same tribe which the hiveship they boarded belonged to.

Sixty is roughly 3 x 20, which would actually correspond to a quick guess by counting 20 hiveships per quadrant, globally.

Fact is, these numbers are not the ultimate truth. They're the only thing we could work from, but the samples they were taken from were largely undetermined to know how many were missed, actually.

That's by the time of the end of Underground, when the Wraith have likely started to cut alliances to get more of Pegasus' limited food stock.

That's a very good point and makes a lot of sense. Basically Grodin saw that there were 21 in our quadrant of the galaxy and times it by 4 to get a low end of 60 MORE in the galaxy.

So that's what roughly 80. The truth is we have no real idea idea how many are out there only that there's enough to give us a good kicking many times over.

He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries."
