I was always curious to know.. if the decision was made that it was time to tell the public about the Stargate, how would they do it? What would be the public reaction?

I wonder if they will do this. It looked like they were preparing to reveal the programme in season 6-8, but then they just... stopped thinking about it. Which is a shame IMO. There should be a gradual build up. We had the start of one, but that is now long forgotten. They should do it in the movie if the Ori are coming for Earth.

You have some very good ideas there. I'll add a few points.

Get as many (trustworthy!) nations involved ASAP. Get the non-trustworthy ones involved just prior to going public, so they don't feel left out and harbour any ill will. Let individual governments worry about their own people. It's so much to take in, and the US shouldn't have to worry about controlling unruly countries.

Initially, people will have more questions than answers so will feel left out, which can lead to assumptions and panic. People fear the unknown. Extensive documentaries should be made beforehand to instantly give the public an insight into what is really going on on base and offworld.

The blow could be softened by beforehand releasing new medicines, new scientific teachings, and non-military technologies to the public, under the guise of "look what new breakthrough our scientists have made" with no mention of alien involvement. When people accept these new ideas, after The Great Disclosure the governments can point to the benefits the world is already using from the SG program, particularly if third world countries etc experience a rise in standard of living, lower disease rates and so forth. It makes the whole SG program seem less scary if it has clearly had a positive effect on our lives.

And later, if the world hasn't fallen apart, more involvement of all nations and a sharing of the costs, risks and responsibilities, and sharing of new (safe) technologies.

What I would do...

DONT TELL ANYONE!!

People would freak out, people are followers. Disclosing something like this with humanity at its current state would be a bad thing.

People are stupid and could not deal with something like this.
It would cause chaos, could lead to war, and a fight over who would get the gate.
Bad news all around. Humanity isnt grown up enough to be able to handle something like this.
Also this isnt even taking into account religion. That is a subject I will not even take into consideration.
Out of all of humanity only a small portion would look to the gate with great positive feelings the rest would rip society apart.
all you would have to do is think, if the world knew it almost came to an end three or more times because of alien species? Yeah there would be no order and if there was most of our freedoms would be gone, well what freedoms we have left that is...
