What do you mean by "work"? The A has never worked as a POO anywhere but earth. In "New Ground" we see the A on the gate, but it's not used as the POO. A POO only works as a POO at its proper location.

Actually, yeh, it does. Since theoretically, the 38 symbols are supposed to be the same on every gate in the galaxy, with the 39th being 'unique' to the gate....even though it isn't always unique.

I don't recall any episode which specifically states there are ALWAYS the same 38 common symbols on every gate. Besides, the Bedrosian gate having the A and not using it as POO is proof that the "unique" symbol is not always the POO even if there are 38 common symbols on every gate. Not to mention the "unique" symbol and the A are both on the beta gate ("Solitudes" and episodes following "Small Victories" until "Redemption", respectively). The unique symbol does not work on earth as a POO ("Solitudes") while the A worked successfully on multiple occasions (Post-"Smal Victories"). This means that at most, that gate has 37 symbols common to ALL gates (Sam hadn't seen the beta "unique" before, and the A doesn't appear on every gate).

The gate can probably sense where the PoO is when it dials, however, you have to put it in just...err...because.

I'd always thought it was a safety measure. Put a unique symbol that must be dialled last in there to prevent any primitive person who shouldn't be using the gate from using it. Kinda like a childlock.
