Lou Diamond Phillips has Entered the STARGATE UNIVERSE

    A brief excerpt:

Q: What made you want to get involved in the Stargate world? Are you a fan of these types of shows?

Lou: I'm grateful for Battlestar because like Edward James Olmos, they needed a three-named ethnic guy.

There are some spoilers (natch) in the interview.

              TODAY IN SCIFI

              EXCERPT:

I was fortunate enough to be able to watch the official pilot of Stargate Universe. nmnm If you were a fan of Atlantis or SG-1, you might have mixed feelings about Universe. However, the problem therein lies with where your tastes are in the scifi genre. SG-1 was very conservative with the violence and action bit, while Atlantis was getting a little edgier with the violence and action. In Universe, at least the pilot, viewers are treated to a more action-oriented approach as opposed to character development. The main characters are likable, but don’t have quite the wit and intuitiveness as their counterparts on Atlantis or SG-1.

Just did my first #SGU interview. On the phone (a 'Phoner') with @edmontonjournal. Happy to report, didn't bring up Indiana Jones, not once.

I did. I still interpret their words the same way. Though it felt like he was having an asthma attack while typing the last few sentences.

Isn't that wording discriminatory against slackers or something like that? Because the wording reminds me of that casting call which had many people upset
Anyhow, it's great to see so many new articles popping up. Keep up the good work, those who are finding them and posting them here.

                            Jamil Walker Smith (SGU) Q&A

I recently had an opportunity to talk with Jamil Walker Smith about his new show, “Stargate Universe,” which premiers on Friday, Oct. 2 at 9 p.m. on SyFy.

One of the first things you get from speaking to him is he has a great sense of humor and he has a lot of insight into the current state of Hollywood and TV. Of course, this comes from a long history in working in the medium (he was 9 when he worked on the animated series “Hey Arnold!”), and a keen intellect.

                            ---------------

Here’s a sample of some of the topics we covered in our discussion. Be sure to pick up Wednesday’s edition of the Michigan Chronicle.

Michigan Chronicle: How important is it to have diversity in science fiction TV and films?

Jamil Walker Smith: I think it’s very important because we live in a culturally diverse world; the new slogan is citizens of the world. It’s only fitting that people that reflect the world, get the opportunity to see the universe.

I’m talking to one of my sisters (she likes Tyler Perry), I said I’m on a ship called the Destiny and I’m trying to get home, and she said, “I know all about that.” The themes that we’re touching on are universal themes that we’re touching on in this show I say are universal themes. Themes that extend beyond science fiction and deal with matters of the human condition and spirit.

Working on this show I often think of and draw from the experience of the Black church because there is something very spiritual and very grounding about the idea of trying to get home.

Check back here on Friday for the entire story.

                              SGU
Edgier and more tragic than previous Stargate series, SGU is about a present-day exploration team from Earth that’s forced trough a stargate and marooned on the outskirts of the universe with diminishing life support.
                              Spoiler:
Expect lots of death, even suicide,
but also blazing heroics from Lou Diamond Phillips as the colonel and delicious antics from Robert Carlyle as the ship’s shady doc. Ming-na plays a pain in the ass human resources exec, the first gay character in Stargate history.

'SG1' marathon a warm-up for awesome 'Stargate Universe'

The latest edition to the "Stargate" franchise launches on Oct. 2 and I can tell you that, if the first three hours are any indication, "Stargate Universe" blows its predecessors out of the, um, universe.

But I'll have tons more on "SGU" in the coming week, including my exclusive interviews with stars Ming-Na and Brian J. Smith. In the meantime, you guys can prepare for the new "U" by watching Syfy's all-day marathon of "Stargate SG1" beginning at 7 a.m. this Friday, Sept. 25. Watch for sneak peeks of the new series during the marathon.
